The One That’s Out….

You know the more you read and observe about this Politics thing, you got to admit that each party is worse than the other. The one that’s out always looks the best. – December 31, 1922  – Will Rogers

In some ways not much has changed since Will’s day. For the most part the polls always seem to indicate that the party out of power has the lead in the early stages of most elections. They say that is true because we Americans don’t really start to consider who we want in our government until at least September of an election year.

But I must agree with the other part of this quote that each party is worse than the other. I had hopes that when Obama as campaigning in 2008 that it would be different this time. That there was finally someone seeking the Oval office who was as compassionate for the least of these as I was. I must admit that I am somewhat disappointed in President Obama’s actions since then. But I can’t place all the blame, and maybe not even the majority of it on him. I never anticipated the mean-spiritedness of our country in the last four years. Could any person have overcome that? I don’t know.

But I do know I expected more from Mr. Obama than he has been able to deliver. He had a change to bring us up to the rest of the world with universal healthcare but he backed away from that much to early in the process.  He had a chance to put our tax structure back to requiring those who are the most fortunate among us to pitch in a little more and he broke down and allowed the rich to keep their tax breaks that Mr. Bush lavishly gave them.

So, yes I am beginning to admit that each party seems to be worse than the other but I am not going to go that one step further and say that the one that is current out looks the best. The current out party could be more accurately labeled the do-nothing party. I can’t imagine our country if those yahoos actually get the reigns of government for another eight years as they did in the Bush administration. They almost brought the country down with their de-regulation schemes then so what could they damage this time around?

In my mind there is only one alternative and that is to keep the do-nothings out of power and hope that things might actually change in our poisonous environment in the next four years. Maybe then someone else can step up and actually make the changes I think are necessary to make us a compassionate nation.

But what do I know…..

  • Yeah the war stuff has also affected my attitudes. President Obama was so convincing that he would get us out of these wars and then when he was elected he did pretty much the same as his predecessor. Another disappointment.

  • I know how you love quotes … and I do too. These quotes from Gore Vidal were posted on the Ronni Bennett’s blog Time Goes By this morning and I thought they were kind of good…not an exact tie in with your post today…but close. Thought you might like them.

•”The United States was founded by the brightest people in the country — and we haven’t seen them since.”

•”What we have in this country is socialism for the rich and free enterprise for the poor.”

•”I’ve been around the ruling class all my life and I’ve been quite aware of their total contempt for the people of the country.”

•”Fifty percent of people won’t vote, and fifty percent don’t read newspapers. I hope it’s the same fifty percent.”

•”The genius of our ruling class is that it has kept a majority of the people from ever questioning the inequity of a system where most people drudge along, paying heavy taxes for which they get nothing in return.”

  • Like you, RJ, I have been very disappointed in Obama’s “politics as usual” approach. Part of that is his inexperience in how the game is played and how to really use the power of the office. The other factor is the goal of the Republicans is to do everything in their power to make the country worse off so they can claim it is all Obama’s fault. If an individual tried to make everything worse he would be considered a traitor. But, as the goal of a polticial party it is OK.

What amazes me is that 8 years of Bush giving us a deficit, giving the rich tax breaks, destroying our financial system ,and putting us in the worst recession in decades isn’t enough to convince people the Republican party has choosen a path of destruction for anyone not white and rich. How can anyone even dream of putting the insane back in charge of the asylum?

Obama may be a disappointment, but I don’t believe he wants to turn us into a nation of lords and serfs.

  • Jane, thanks so much for the quotes. I am putting them in my database so don’t be surprised if they become post topics in the future. I was a Gore Vidal fan, I loved his book “Lincoln” but haven’t read him lately.

Yeah like he said, I think the brightest in our country were the founders. Nothing lately even comes close to their wisdom…

  • Hi Bob, as usual you and I completely agree. His inexperience and not having someone with the experience close to him was probably a big factor. He just seemed to let other push him in one direction or another.

I guess we should come to expect the short memory of the electorate. Its like my quote of the day shown in my header. People seem to think that since stupidity got us into the mess it should be able to get us out…..

Being a scifi fan I had an interesting thought coming back from the soup kitchen a while ago comparing the Republican party to Star Wars. It seems the Republicans have completely gone to the dark side. There are no Jedi warriors amongst them anymore. Of course I will be blogging about that soon. I will leave it as a surprise who Darth Vader is among them. But you probably guessed already…..
