Just Bill Being Bill….

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Former president Bill Clinton’s stem-winding nomination speech was a fact-checker’s nightmare: lots of effort required to run down his many statistics and factual claims, producing little for us to write about.

Republicans will find plenty of Clinton’s scorching opinions objectionable. But with few exceptions, we found his stats checked out. The worst we could fault him for was a suggestion that President Obama’s Affordable Care Act was responsible for bringing down the rate of increase in health care spending, when the fact is that the law’s main provisions have yet to take effect.

I must admit that I have always enjoyed listening to Mr. Clinton’s speeches. He just has a way with finding just the right words for every story.  If someone had just super-glued his zipper on that fateful day of his “improper relationship” there would be little to fault him with during his presidency. After all he was the only president in 50 years to have a surplus budget. I’m sure if any of my radical right friends dared to listen to his speech last night they are probably still uncontrollably wincing.

During his speech he step-by-step dismantled every argument against President Obama found in the many vitriol comments given at the RNC last week. About the only thing the fact-checker could find in it was that maybe he gave too much credit to Obamacare in causing the healthcare declining costs last year.  I know the Republicans gave the Affordable Care Act (ACA) the name Obamacare as a slam but it is now being commonly used as showing an achievement for the president.

If there is anyone who still is on the fence in this election I would strongly advise them to get a copy of this speech and read it. It was a forty-five minute speech given in the typical “Now listen this is important…” Bill Clinton mode. I would attempt to put down some of the most memorable things here but there are just too many to keep below my self-imposed five-hundred or so word limit for blog posts.

The one thing in the speech that I will mention is his comment that during his lifetime he has never seen such hatred displayed toward a president. That is the most distressful part of the Tea Party version of politics to me. We had some very good friends in the past who are now spewing this hatred. To see the anger and hate in their eyes when they talk about the President of the United States is truly scary to me. But maybe the scariest part of this is that they are doing it in church related functions such as Bible study classes. I seem to remember Jesus telling us to love our enemies. My past friends seem to have forgotten that phrase as well as so many other found in their bibles!

But what do I know…

  1. The words that resonated for me from Bill’s speech were these…

“If you want a winner-take-all ‘you’re-on-your-own’ society, you should support the Republican ticket. If you want a country of shared opportunities and shared responsibility — a we’re-all-in-it-together’ society — you should vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.”

That sums it up well, don’t you think?

  2. Yes Jane. That does sum it all up. ‘Shared opportunities and shared responsibility’ is code speak for taking from the rich and those who work hard for a living and giving it to the poor and the clueless. I am aghast at how just a speech from a lying president, Clinton (who BTW slept with way more women than Monica) can change anyone’s mind with rhetoric. Doesn’t speak too well for the Dems. Not the ones who really did vote to have God omitted from their platform. Or did Clinton wipe that out of your brain also? Clinton is from another decade. We are NOT in 1995 anymore. Nor can we forget how Obama treated Hillary.
Clinton’s speech did not wipe out the $16tillion in debt (6 of which Obama did himself) the 23 million Americans who still have no jobs, the 47.6 million Americans on food stamps and the continuing rise in health care costs (despite Obamacare) and coming January 1st the fiscal cliff coming in higher taxes for everybody! All the democrats can think of is free birth control for women, free abortions and Sandra Fluke now wants free transvestite operations. Yup! The Democrats are just brilliant.
To think a stupid speech given by the has-been Bill Clinton makes you forget all the horror Obama has brought to this country is laughable.
RJ, I thought you were a man of God? Is this really and truly what you want????? A political party that has vehemently turned away from God? I know you can’t hear so you really didn’t hear the true yays and nays when the Dems took their vote to put God back into the platform. The nays were louder than the yays, that’s why they took the vote 3 times. It was all a lie. The Dems voted loudly NO to God and Israel.
    Is this what you want????????

  3. It sounds like you listened to the Clinton speech last night Jane 😉
But you did a good job of summarizing the difference. Being an altruist there is only one choice for me and that is a second term for President Obama to finish cleaning up the stupid mess the Republicans left behind.

I was thinking the other day that the GOP ought to take the Will Rogers quote in my blog title with a slight twist as their theme for this year. I’m sure someone could write a catchy tune around it.

“GOP Stupidity got us into this mess; why can’t it get us out?”

  4. Hank, Hank, Hank, there you go again….
You have insulted me and my readers for the last time. Since you can’t seem to act with any civility and refrain from name calling this will be your last comment here. I have really tried to be patient with you, both with your “hank” name and your “anonymous” comments, but that clearly seems futile now. I’m sure there are other blogs who share your conspiracy theories of how the mindless Democrats are trying to take down the country. I hope you find one. Your mission to drive empathy from this country through hateful words and actions is indeed impossible. That is as long as there are people like me and many of the folks who follow this blog.

Goodbye my friend and I hope you find some peace in your life. The only thing your hatred can do is to eventually consume you and the party that you love so much…

  5. from my observations of both the Republican and Democrat convention speeches, the best speeches came from the Democrats. I am surprised how I have changed to support the more personable Democratic leaders. Michelle O’bama’s speech really resonated with me as she talked or shared about the values of her husband, her own family, and how our purpose is to help those in need. I was ,like you, totally angered by personal comments said in our growing Christ Bible Study on Monday evenings. So, after reflecting with Henri Nouwen’s thoughts, I realized that my growth with the Lord was not going forward. I have decided to take a break for awhile to see where the Holy Spirit leads me.

    1. Thanks for the comments Mary. We “people loving” Christians have to stick together to show others that those who hate in the name of their faith are not the true face of the followers of Christ. And thanks for the reference to Henri Nouwen. I will put him on my read list.
