Latin America…..

Here is a quick question for you. How did Central and South America get the name “Latin America”?? This popped off the top of my head while watching the news recently.  At first thought I came up with Latin was the language of the Roman Empire which was based in Italy. But I don’t remember any country in South America being founded by Italy. Here is what Wikipedia says about the origin of the term “Latin America”: In a more literal definition, which remains faithful to the original usage, Latin America designates all of those countries and territories in the … Continue reading Latin America…..

Budget Minded Republicans……

I know the current version of the Republican party is supposed to be all about fiscal austerity but I have trouble actually seeing them live out that concept. When it comes to the safety net and so-called “entitlement” issues they scream about needing to cut back or at least for total accountability. But when it comes to the bloated military expenses, homeland security and tax breaks for the rich they appear to throw that concept out the window. Of course that means that their austerity programs, if they are implemented as they suggest, will end up being done on the … Continue reading Budget Minded Republicans……

The History of the Church….

What matters to those who look to history for important lessons is that something was lost in the fourth century that permanently changed the nature of Christianity. If we do not recover that spirit of loyalty to the ethic of the Sermon on the Mount as opposed to saluting the Nicene Creed, the decline of the church will continue. If we persist in arguing across our theological divides in a perishing world, then the church deserves its fate. If we cannot reverse the move away from praxis and toward doctrine that was sealed by Constantine, the church will become, and … Continue reading The History of the Church….

Quit Complaining And…

My inspiration for this post comes from various quotes but has the same theme.  It is easy to sit back and complain about this or that. We all do it and I am certainly no exception. But just complaining about something seldom has  the effect of actually resolving what you complain against. Here are some words from those much more famous than I am regarding this topic: I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts.  ~John Locke Well done is better than well said.  ~Benjamin Franklin The punishment which the wise suffer who refuse … Continue reading Quit Complaining And…

My Blogging Philosophy….

I will be as honest as I can. I will sometimes tell you the weirdest truths I won’t talk down to you I will assume that you are just as smart and compassionate as I am I will not scream or rant with the unreal belief that doing so will change your mind. Sometimes I wonder why I blog so much. Is it to soothe my ego? Is is to gain fame? Is it to get you to understand some alternate truth? Is it just to pass the time of day? In reality it is probably a little bit of … Continue reading My Blogging Philosophy….

I Am A Morning Person….

When I was a teenager it took a bomb to get me out of bed. The first class of the day in high school started at 8:00am. I can barely remember much about them.  When I was in college I was plagued with many 7:30am classes. The only “D” I got in college was in speedy reading. I just couldn’t manage to concentrate on the totally boring things I was supposed to be reading during that hour. For the most part that time was spent “sleeping in” and therefore the “D”.  Over the years that condition has slowly changed. In … Continue reading I Am A Morning Person….

Critical Thinking…..

I pride myself on being a critical thinker. I just naturally don’t go along with the latest trends simply because many others do. Critical thinking is at the very foundation of my life. Mob mentality  which is the opposite of critical thinking is to me an absurd and idiotic condition. But what is critical thinking? Critical thinking can only be possible when one opens his mind to the possibility that current beliefs may be only partially true or may even be false. Here is some of what Wikipedia says critical thinking means: Critical thinking clarifies goals, examines assumptions, discerns … Continue reading Critical Thinking…..

The Sola’s…How Did We Get Here?

Gulley, Philip; Mulholland, James —  If Grace Is True: Why God Will Save Every Person We are not to worship the Bible; we are to worship the One the Bible reveals. Too often, we clutch desperately to our Bibles, memorizing only those verses that support our views and panicking when anyone suggests God might speak a fresh word. We belong to a long tradition of people who’ve found it safer to trust the Scripture we can control than the God we cannot. Jesus never promised a written document to his followers. He promised something far more wonderful. He said, “The … Continue reading The Sola’s…How Did We Get Here?

How to Survive China’s Pollution Problem: Masks and Bubbles

Source: How to Survive China’s Pollution Problem: Masks and Bubbles | Design Decoded. Last January, air pollution reached new levels of toxicity in China. Just how bad did things get? According to the Chinese Air Quality Index (AQI), measurements of particulate matter in the air reached more than 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter the northeastern part of country. That probably doesn’t mean anything to you without context though, so here it is: anything above 300 is considered “hazardous” and citizens are warned that they “may experience more serious health effects.” For even more context, consider that the U.S. AQI only … Continue reading How to Survive China’s Pollution Problem: Masks and Bubbles

Life’s Dramas…….

Anyone who has watched movies, and that surely is almost all of us, know that when certain scenes come up there is always very dramatic music in the background. One of the strange things about me being deaf for more than 25 years now it that my brain just doesn’t remember what music sounds like. Even though I don’t remember the sounds the fact that it was dramatic music still remains. When the soldiers landed on Normandy the dramatic music boomed. Whenever there was a seemingly life changing event on the silver screen there was always dramatic music in … Continue reading Life’s Dramas…….

Power To The People….

I enjoy making predictions. Don’t we all. And since I am probably no worse at it than any of the so-called expert, here I go again. I predict that within the next twenty years the true power brokers will be the temp employment agencies and their eventual workers unions. I know, as usual I am way out in left field with this prediction but again as usual hear me out before you change channels so to speak.. Most businesses now rely on employment agencies for their workforce. Corporations are no longer  willing to provide any perks except to upper management. … Continue reading Power To The People….

At The Top Of The High Risk List….

Source: Fiscal nightmare looms at ‘bloated’ Pentagon – NBC Politics. Just two weeks ago, the GAO kept the Pentagon on its annual “High Risk List” of departments whose books are so mysterious and opaque that they’re at high risk of fraud, waste and mismanagement…. He (retired Army Gen. David Barno) said the Pentagon’s method of operating is comparable to driving a 1985 Oldsmobile which is leaking oil, “and every time we go out on the highway at 65 miles an hour, we come back after another day, there’s more and more oil on the floor of our garage in the … Continue reading At The Top Of The High Risk List….

Jesus’ Not So Secret Message….

Many in the Christian faith believe that if they study their bible enough they will come away with Jesus’ secret message. They think that hidden in those bible verses is a secret message that he intends for only his “true” believers. Like the Da Vinci code it is hidden away so that only a few will receive it. I’m not a fan of conspiracy theories so I tend to disregard those who have such beliefs. To me Jesus made it ultimately clear what his message is: The Greatest Commandment Mark 12:28-32 One of the teachers of the law came and … Continue reading Jesus’ Not So Secret Message….

Gridlock Because…..

I VERY much suspect that if thinking men would have the courage to think for themselves, and to speak what they think, it would be found they do not differ in . . . opinions as much as is supposed.  —  Jefferson, Thomas We all recognize that gridlock has frozen our government processes.  If only the people who represent each of us were to take to heart the words of Jefferson above we might just melt the sorry state that presently binds us.  The trouble with congress right now is that the people representing us are allowing a few who … Continue reading Gridlock Because…..

Fixations….

WHY??   I ask that a lot, especially when it comes to how we choose to live our lives. I simply can’t understand how we Americans are so fixated on flexing our muscle throughout the world when we have so many thing that need repair in our own country. It is almost as if we are willing to sacrifice our own well being in order to exercise our power. We must realize that the world didn’t assign us to be policemen of the world, that was a choice we made, often times much to our own detriment. Since I hold … Continue reading Fixations….

Betrayed by Friendship….

Betrayed by friendship is not a bad memorial to leave. – 16 June 1931   Will Rogers Will, I had to think about this one to understand what you were talking about. I think it means that is it better to have friends even if some end up betraying you than it is to have no friends at all.  That’s kind of deep but knowing you as I do I suspect that is your point. It kind of like the one about “its better to have love and lost than not to have loved at all”. Yeah, some friendships can result … Continue reading Betrayed by Friendship….

The Turning Point…..

“Government is not a solution to our problem, government is the problem.”  – Ronald Reagan Sometimes when we look back at history we wonder how did we get to where we are.  We often have trouble pinpointing a particular person or date to where it all began. On January 20, 1981 when Ronald Reagan uttered the words above  he ushered in a new breed of Republicans. These particular words were the turning point to gridlock and jumping from crisis to crisis that we see today.  It is also the specific moment that I turned away from the Republican party to look elsewhere. No longer … Continue reading The Turning Point…..

Ask Shane Claiborne…(Response)

Source: Ask Shane Claiborne…(Response). You also see in Scripture that when people encounter Jesus, they don’t all walk away to pursue the exact same lifestyle. For instance, Jesus dealt with two tax collectors—Matthew and Zaccheus. Matthew chose to sell everything, but Zaccheus, from what we know, sold half of everything, paid everyone four times what he owed them, and then went on. So they both reimagine their life and their economics, and they both challenge the system, but they did it in different ways. And you’ll notice that Matthew didn’t get all upset and come out and tell Zaccheus how to … Continue reading Ask Shane Claiborne…(Response)

Inspiring Words From Thomas Jefferson

A DECALOGUE of canons for observation in practical life: 1. Never put off till to-morrow what you can do to-day. 2. Never trouble another for what you can do yourself. 3. Never spend your money before you have it 4. Never buy what you do not want, because it is cheap: it will be dear to you. 5. Pride costs us more than hunger, thirst, and cold. 6. We never repent of having eaten too little. 7. Nothing is troublesome that we do willingly. 8. How much pain have cost us the evils which have never happened. 9. Take things … Continue reading Inspiring Words From Thomas Jefferson

Something About Running the Country…

There is people so excited over this election that they think the President has something to do with running this country. – 30 October 1932   Will Rogers I am going to leave the quote above to pretty much stand on it own.  Many want to blame the president on everything that happens in the country. “It rained so much today, it must be the president’s fault”.  I am more of a realist maybe.  I don’t think any of those yahoos in Washington have much to do with what happens in the country. And thanks heavens for that! Continue reading Something About Running the Country…
