This post is going to be about some uncomfortable facts for my GOP friends. It is about how the public workforce has shrunk and become more efficient than the private workforce.
I’m sure that in the coming months all those department chiefs that CO3 has put in place and even CO3 himself will eventually come to realize that there are some very basic differences between public service and the private sector.
Mr. Ryan has been putting out plans to dismantle our society’s safety net for years now. But he too often cloaks the facts with “improving” instead of eliminating. If he wants to eliminate social security and Medicare I wish he would just come out and say so and let the electorate decide if that is something to be done.
But, I do agree with my GOP friends that there is one public sector group that I think does need to be privatized and that is the USPS. Before the age of paperless billing and other alternate methods of delivering our information this agency was absolutely necessary but today that just isn’t the case. I don’t remember the last time I ever got any meaningful documents through the mail? Being a public sector agency that has to compete directly with private sector competitors proves in itself that it no longer needs public support.
The military, which gobbles up the vast majority of discretionary spending shouldn’t be exempt from public funding cuts. One of the things I do agree with is that the U.S. should not be the policemen of the world. If that were to be accomplished we could easily cut defense spending by several orders of magnitude. But that is another story..
