I want to put on my fiscal conservative hat for this post. On a personal level, the retirement community where I live is having problems filling all the positions needed to provide their usual excellent service. It seems that almost everyone lately has a “We are hiring” sign out. This situation seems dreadful. Even at $15/hour, there seem to be few takers.
I’m sure part of the reason is the ongoing pandemic. People are still reluctant in going to places where many people are clustered together, especially those who are still stubbornly refusing the vaccine. But, I kinda think it has more to do with the fact that the government continues to give money away at a completely unsustainable pace. The Democrats inside the beltway seem to think that money is THE answer to all our current problems, so they are giving it away to anyone who does, or doesn’t, need it is the way to solve it?
I don’t remember exactly, but I know I got a couple of substantial check for relief in the last year. I didn’t really need either of them. I gave all the first one to defeat Trump in 2020. I like to think I did my part in getting that despicable person out of the Oval Office. 😎 The second check just got deposited in an account. I totally intend to also give that money to a worthy cause. I know the unemployment rate at one time exceeded 10%, which is high, but still that meant that nine out of ten people had jobs. Did they really need relief checks?
It took us forty years to get into this mess, we don’t need to correct it all in one year…
The wide disparity between the “haves” and the “have-nots” started with Reagan during the 1980s, so it has been going on for forty years or more. My State has a minimum wage of $7.25/hour and hasn’t been raised for more than a decade. Yes, it is certainly time to do something about that, but not all at once.
One of the problems is that our government and country is run on a very short-term basis. It seems that the politicians, both Republican and Democrat, just don’t look beyond tomorrow or maybe are simply terrified of those who elect them. The Radical Right, White Evangelicals, currently have a stranglehold on the Republican Party. So, long-term thinkers simply have no power in today’s government, and they are fleeing at an atrocious rate!
In the current climate, I fear for our country’s long-term existence. Will sanity ever return? To close off this post, yes, we need to spend on our infrastructure and such, but it doesn’t have to be completely done right away.
Very gloomy state of affairs. We have been on a steady decline for 20 years and it just keeps accelerating — now we’re on the fast track.

Oh, I don’t know, Abi. The politics is a little more vicious now, but it has always been that way for the most part. There are many periods in history where we adamantly disagree with each other. The Civil War killed more Americans than any conflict since. Somehow we managed to come back together, and I kinda think we will manage to do it again this time around. Be patient.

I think it’s the worst it has been in my lifetime. I keep hoping we can turn it around. Thanks for the encouragement, RJ.
