Some Messy Stuff….

I know most of us get just about all our knowledge about church history from our church run bible studies. It seems that most of the professional clergy, meaning those who earn money from their participation in church, only seem to want to give us the good side of history. ¬†The old saying that “history belongs to the victors” is also true in the Christian church. It seems¬†local pastor/priests, seminary professors, theologians, and such don’t really come out and tell the average layman just how messy Christian church history is, that is if they even know it themselves. They tend … Continue reading Some Messy Stuff….

Aside…. What does Faith in Jesus Mean??

Many people say they have faith in Jesus but I’m not sure they really know what they mean by that. ¬†The ¬†word itself has been so modified by man over the years. ¬†Among other things I think faith means illumination.. ¬†When you have faith it sheds light on the meaning of your life and puts everything into clearer perspective…. It means loving God and loving your neighbor. Continue reading Aside…. What does Faith in Jesus Mean??

I am bringing up a new category here at RLL called an “Aside”. Anyone who has been on my other blog at knows that things frequently pop into my head that just must be released ūüôā ¬†The same goes for topics of this site. Asides will fill some of the voids between my twice weekly posts on church history. ¬†When I have an aside for RLL I will try to make sure it is¬†preceded¬†by the above banner. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ As you maybe noticed I recently did some right brain work and created a new header for this blog. The one … Continue reading Aside…..

Math… Now Spelling….

I know I am going to sound like an “old guy” here but I seem to remember the same thing happened as shown by Mr. Stahler’s cartoon above with math. I was in college when the first calculators were invented so I remember the hours and hours I spent in my grade school days learning¬†multiplication¬†and long division. Although I was somewhat proficient at it I was never that keen on math so memorizing the multiplication tables was not a favorite thing for me but I did learn them. My teacher drilled me back and forth on them. When I went … Continue reading Math… Now Spelling….

As Cheap As The People….

What the government has got to do is live as cheap as the people. ‚Äď December 21, 1933 ¬† ¬†Will Rogers ¬†I have often on this blog mentioned that I am a proud social-progressive but I probably don’t as often proclaim that I am a fiscal conservative. For that reason this post as a general rule rings very true to me. ¬†Our government should learn to live as frugally as it’s citizens. There are obvious places where that is not the case. One of those that I often pronounce here is our military budget but that is not the only … Continue reading As Cheap As The People….

About Me and This Study…

I want to state up front that I most likely don’t have a complete picture of church history and I’m sure some of my conclusions will go contrary to many of today’s theologians. Especially those with very narrow agendas. I also want to tell you that since there are now 39,000+ different versions of the church of Christ I believe that the church is severely fractured if not broken. But that does not mean that I have given up hope as I definitely see a possibility for great healing. I come into this study with a strong emphasis on the … Continue reading About Me and This Study…

Being Broad Minded….

Nothing makes a man broad-minded like adversity ¬†– ¬†Will Rogers I can certainly understand this quote from Will. The adversity in my life, although coming more frequently than I would like, has certainly made me more broad-minded. Coming from humble beginning has made me sensitive to the daily plight of the homeless and financially challenged around me. Going deaf in mid-life has made me more aware of the challenges others face with handicaps every day. Being asked to leave a church because I didn’t have the “right” beliefs has made me aware of all those who are gun-shy about anything … Continue reading Being Broad Minded….

Dressing For Dinner…

There is a great tendency all over the country now to be high brow. More people should work for their dinner instead of dressing for it ¬†— Will Rogers This quote caught my attention because for the last few months I have been watching the PBS series “Downton Abby”. Here is how Wikipedia describes the series: The series is set in the fictional Downton Abbey, the Yorkshire¬†country house¬†of the¬†Earl¬†and¬†Countess¬†of¬†Grantham, and follows the lives of the¬†aristocratic Crawley family and their servants during the reign of King¬†George V. The first series spans the two years before the¬†Great War¬†beginning with news of the … Continue reading Dressing For Dinner…

How Did We Get Here??

Have you ever wondered about how we got to where we are in Christianity in the U.S. ? I started this blog in 2008 to study of how well current Christian denominations follow Jesus Christ’s words. As reported here (see the About This Blog button above) I found that hardly any of them pay much attention to Jesus’ words ¬†especially putting them into action. ¬†Instead they seem to be more interested in our sex lives and many other “empire” issues (empire meaning worldly issues).¬†I was so disappointed in what I found I no longer call myself a Christian but simply … Continue reading How Did We Get Here??

Welcome to the Re-Purposed Red Letter Living Blog

After an almost one year hiatus I will soon be posting again on this blog with this new format and a new direction. Where I Have Been: ¬†The first three years this blog examined how current day churches are doing in following Jesus’ words as found in the red letters of most Christian bibles. That study was concluded in August of 2011 and is still available here for your review. If you want to know more about the results of this study click on the “About This Blog” button above. Where Am I Headed: Going forward besides studying the red … Continue reading Welcome to the Re-Purposed Red Letter Living Blog

A Divine Act of Providence….

If by some divine act of providence we could get rid of both these parties and hired some good men, like any other big business does, why that would be sitting pretty. – November 1, 1932 ¬†Will Rogers I am going to go off-topic here and talk about divine providence. Just what is it? Here is the general definition: Divine providence¬†is the means through which God governs all things in the universe. The principle of¬†divine providence asserts that God is in complete control And here is one from Wikipedia more aligned with religious theology: In¬†theology,¬†divine providence, or simply¬†providence, is God’s … Continue reading A Divine Act of Providence….

To Take a Drink…

A few years ago we were so afraid that the poor people was liable to take a drink. Now we’ve fixed it so that they can’t even get something to eat. ¬†— Will Rogers Every time I look at all my source quotes from Will for one to the included here I am amazed at how they apply to our times as well as Will’s eighty years ago. ¬†Most of Will’s quotes come from the Depression years of the 1930s. While he was one of the 1% of his era he had the mind and compassion for the common folk. … Continue reading To Take a Drink…

Pentagon Budget Increases…..

I wanted to put out a “aside” quick post to update one of my earlier posts about the Republican Budget that recently passed the house. Here are some words from a Sojourner email I just received. Another week in Washington brought another week of attacks on the poor. The immoral budget proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan called for billions of dollars in cuts to poverty programs like Medicaid, food stamps, and other programs that feed hungry Americans and help those in need. But here‚Äôs the kicker: Ryan‚Äôs destructive plan would increase the already bloated military budget by 20%. Cuts for … Continue reading Pentagon Budget Increases…..

I Love You All……

Everybody in America has been good to me and I love you all, even critics and Congressmen. ‚Äď November 23, 1926 ¬†Will Rogers I don’t believe that Will Rogers had any strong religious convictions. In that regard he¬†is like most people today. But that does not mean he was without compassion. He was very much into it for the little guy especially during the depression years. Maybe Will wasn’t a Christian but he lived out the command of Jesus Christ to love one another. He even included his critics and Congressmen! ¬†This group is among the most unlovable but he … Continue reading I Love You All……

New form of Christian civic engagement

Source:¬†New form of Christian civic engagement ‚Äď “We are seeing head-snapping generational change,” notes conservative columnist Michael Gerson. “The model of social engagement of the religious right is increasingly exhausted.” Thank God. A distinctive way of being Christian in the public square ‚ÄĒ a softer, less partisan way ‚ÄĒ is emerging. And this cultural change could be the very thing our faith needs to survive. This article is inspiring indeed! ¬†Even when I used to call myself and Evangelical Christian I was totally¬†embarrassed¬†by the extreme political turmoil caused by the so called “Moral Majority”. Their morals were limited to … Continue reading New form of Christian civic engagement

Second-Hand Thinking…..

A man in the country does his own thinking, but you get him into town and he soon will be thinking second-handed. – May 1, 1926 ¬†Will Rogers Second hand thinking seems so prevalent today especially in our nation’s capital. Each political persuasion has their own set of key words that must be spoken during any discussion of their ideology.¬†Most of these words come from their party leaders or other talking heads such as Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. They have honed their lists of words that cause the highest emotional response (especially fear) and they use those words as … Continue reading Second-Hand Thinking…..

God, I think you kinda messed up….

Hi God, I know I talk to you often but usually not in so public a sphere. But I think I need to let others know about this. ¬†God, I think you kinda messed up! ¬† I know I am just a little guy that is occupying a very small space on this earth for a very short period of time. I know you are infinitely, and I mean infinitely, smarter than I am but I got to come right out and ask you why you gave us men so much testosterone? ¬†It just seems to be the root of … Continue reading God, I think you kinda messed up….

Being a Writer….

You can‚Äôt stop a person if he gets it in his head he can write. – June 11, 1933 ¬†Will Rogers You got me pegged Will! Although I am not an “official” published author in the old sense of the word I do have it in my head that I can write. My teachers over the years, both in high school and college, told me I could write. I certainly enjoy putting the virtual pen to paper as they say. Now that I am older I have more experiences to use as sources so I think maybe I have more … Continue reading Being a Writer….

I Need a Breather…..

History ain’t what it is. It’s what some writer wanted it to be. ¬†— Will Rogers Ok, I’m a writer, not a very well-known one but a writer just the same. ūüėČ ¬†So, I am hereby proclaiming that all this political stuff ¬†has disappeared for the next week or so. At least you won’t find any of it here during that time. ¬†I need a breather from all that stuff. ¬†Today I voted in our primary (as if it really means anything now) and now it is on to boycotting this stuff at least a week. I have done my … Continue reading I Need a Breather…..

About Rush…..

It must be almost heart breaking for those splendid writers, to see what some of us syndicate birds get away with. – October 29, 1933 ¬†Will Rogers Don’t get me wrong, I certainly enjoy making my daily blog posts and having you guys interested enough to want to read them but Will’s message for today does bug me sometimes. ¬†I am absolutely not the best writer/storyteller around but I think I do have somewhat of a gift in this area. The most “syndicated bird” around today is probably Rush Limbaugh. It is reported that he makes somewhere around $30 … Continue reading About Rush…..

I’m Kind of Like a Politician….

I am kind of like a politician. The less I know about anything, the more I can say about it. – June 12, 1928 ¬† Will Rogers I often jokingly cite another sentence like this. I don’t know the source but it goes something like this You don’t have to know what you are saying as long as you say it with authority – Unknown These two phrases seem to belong hand-in-hand. Whenever I dare to watch one of the cable news channels, and that seems to be less frequently as recent years have passed, I am constantly reminded of … Continue reading I’m Kind of Like a Politician….

Promise Everything / Deliver Nothing….

You know the platform will always be the same, promise everything, deliver nothing. – July 8, 1928 ¬† Will Rogers Of course Will’s message above applies to both Republicans and Democrats and is equally applicable today. ¬†You might even say this is the campaign theme for the Romney presidential run. The Mitt Romney of a couple of months from now will be nothing like the Mitt Romney of six months ago. He got the Republican nomination by promising to be just like the radical right core of his party. He lined up behind all their “anti” stands. Now that … Continue reading Promise Everything / Deliver Nothing….

A Mind Is a Terrible Thing To Waste…..

When a fellow don‚Äôt have much mind it don‚Äôt take him long to make it up. ‚Äď November 3, 1935 ¬†Will Rogers As Will mentions here it doesn’t seem like many today have much mind and what they have is most often closed. They are fixated on one tunnel vision world view and absolutely nothing will shake them from that view. They have made up their minds long ago that their view of the world is the only valid one. It is almost like that guy about one hundred years ago that tried to shut down the U.S. patent office … Continue reading A Mind Is a Terrible Thing To Waste…..

No Good Horse Traders…..

All there is to politics is trading. That‚Äôs why politics is not as good as it was years ago. They don‚Äôt have as many old-time horse traders in there. These we got are just amateurs. They‚Äôre crude with their trades. There is really no ‚Äúfinesse.‚ÄĚ You might not get that. ‚ÄúFinesse‚ÄĚ is a French word and it means sneaking it over. — Will Rogers Maybe Will, as usual is on to something here. Maybe our problems with politics today is that all the current office holders are just amateurs at horse trading. ¬†An alternative way I might mention on this … Continue reading No Good Horse Traders…..

My Evangelical Friend…

I just went another short round with my radical right gun totting evangelical friend on helping those less fortunate than us. ¬†Here are some of his words replying to a post I made on FaceBook. The root cause of most of our deficit problems is still those that work and produce must pay for the existence of all those that do not work or produce goods and services. Few functions in the government produce a good or service worthy of a salary. My conservative evangelical friend very very often shouts that there are just too many “free loaders” in our … Continue reading My Evangelical Friend…

The Perfect Storm…..

The Perfect Storm is generally thought to be weather related. The movie by that name came out in 2000. It was about how a number of various weather events coming together at the same time resulted in a massive storm off the New England coast. But the Perfect Storm is more generically know as shown below from Wikipedia: A¬†perfect storm¬†is a confluence of events that drastically aggravates a situation. This idea came off the top of my head lately. What if a confluence of political and economic events¬†occurred¬†in the country that drastically changed the situation? Would it be possible for … Continue reading The Perfect Storm…..

What Language Did Adam & Eve Speak??

Some Christians believe that each and every word in the Bible is literally true and without error. I belonged to one of those churches at one time. I often asked¬†embarrassing¬†questions during our weekly bible study. Questions the clergy leader really didn’t care to try to answer. ¬†Asking those questions is probably one of the reasons they tossed me out. I never got to ask the question in the title of this post but I would be very interested in knowing how they might answer it. According to the biblical account Adam & Eve were the first humans. They had a … Continue reading What Language Did Adam & Eve Speak??

Being Happy….

The Lord split knowledge up among his subjects about equal. The so-called ignorant is happy. You think he is happy because he knows any better, maybe he is happy because he knows enough to be happy. The smart one knows a lot, that makes him unhappy because he can’t impart it to his friends. Discontent comes in proportion to knowledge. — Will Rogers Intelligence and being happy I’m sure there is ¬†some correlation but I am not so sure I would agree too much with Will’s assertion that if you are smart you are unhappy because your friends don’t know … Continue reading Being Happy….

War and Peace….

‚Äé[War] won‚Äôt stop till there is as much brains and scientific study put to aid peace as there is to promote war. ‚Äď May 31, 1928 ¬†Will Rogers Here we are one world war and dozens of other wars later and still we can’t understand what Will was saying almost one hundred years ago. ¬†Except for a brief period during the Clinton years we have been in constant wars throughout my sixty-some years on this earth. Our soldiers are getting way beyond weary as evidenced by the recent massacre in Afghanistan by a four tour American soldier. Our national debt … Continue reading War and Peace….

Handing the Country Over to Our Corporate Structure??

Source: ¬†Goldman Sachs culture ‘toxic’? Letter confirms suspicions about Wall Street. – Polls show that Americans hold a very low opinion of Wall Street, and a damning public letter of resignation from a Goldman Sachs executive could only amplify that perception. I don’t understand why half or more of the country vote the Republican ticket. Isn’t that the party that wants to hand America over to the CEOs? They seem to think that if we only got out of the way of corporate America everything would be great. Have all these folks been living in caves the last couple … Continue reading Handing the Country Over to Our Corporate Structure??

$1.75 Gasoline Just Down the Road….

It seems that the favorite hobby right now is to complain about gas prices and particularly to blame the high prices on President Obama ūüôā We all like to remember the good old days when gasoline was much cheaper. When I first started driving gasoline was $0.28 per gallon! But what if I told you that you can get gas even now for $1.75 per gallon? Well that is not exactly true but the result is the same thing. There is a rather simple way to accomplish this feat and that is to dump your SUV or pickup and get … Continue reading $1.75 Gasoline Just Down the Road….

History Is…..

History ain’t what it is. It’s what some writer wanted it to be. ¬†– Will Rogers Oh Will you sage!! How did so many wise things come from your lips? ¬†Another way of saying this is that “history belongs to the victor. Will Rogers, like me to a lessor degree, was part native American. He grew up in Oklahoma which was where most of the native American tribes ended up by the early 1900s. So, I’m sure Will had his ancestry in mind when the wrote these words. We native Americans have always been¬†portrayed¬†as those filthy savages in most of … Continue reading History Is…..

Every Wrinkle Is A Picture….

Great artists say that the most beautiful thing in the world is a baby. Well, the next is an old lady, for every wrinkle is a picture. – Will Rogers I guess some people are just not historians, either at the personal level or¬†otherwise. When they begin to see a wrinkle or two on their faces they rush to a plastic surgeon. For those less affluent they make a panic trip to the drug store for the latest anti-wrinkle cream. The latest reports show that in the U.S. we spend more than $10 billion per year for Botox and the … Continue reading Every Wrinkle Is A Picture….

My Best Friend…

Seeing a fellow blogger talk about his new pet reminded me that I have been getting too serious on this blog lately. So I thought it was time to kick back on this post and show you one of my best friend. Best friends seem to be hard to come by in my senior years. ūüôā She has been with us for about ¬†four years now. Although she weighs in at over sixty pounds she thinks she is a lap dog. This picture was taken a few months ago during our only snow storm that lasted more than a day … Continue reading My Best Friend…

Deserves a Second Showing….

I am bringing back one of my favorite posts for January of last year. It seems appropriate given all we have learned from the twenty-odd, and I mean odd, Republican debates we have had to endure so far. I’m sure that if the topic had come up during one of their debates they would all have throughly backed this theme. From January 11, 2011 Source:;_ylt=At28KK0Z7OndNM3vfaeRt82s0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTFlZW4ybXNuBHBvcwMyMTcEc2VjA2FjY29yZGlvbl9vcGluaW9uBHNsawNiYXJyaWVydG9iZXQ- The first words of this article caught my attention today.¬† Let‚Äôs pull a few quotes from the article; they are in blue below.
