Drinking the Kool-aid, Etal…

Tomorrow is perhaps the most important election of my lifetime.  It will determine if an extreme narcissist, habitual liar, con man continues to have free reign to do whatever he wants. Yeah, the tax cuts that the Republican party passed are having a temporary effect and the destruction of the regulations needed to prevent another meltdown have added a couple of bucks to the paycheck, but given our extreme deficits and underfunded infrastructure improvement that will end soon.

What befuddles me about our current times are those who have eagerly gulped down this guy’s kool-aid. Can’t they look beyond the end of their nose to see what is coming down the road?  Why are some people so naively gullible to his constant lies?  Most of his “base” live in rural areas and from personal experiences that is where educational opportunities are the most lacking.  Did they miss out on what the purpose of government is and how it is funded in a democracy? Is it the lack of basic information that impedes their understanding? I kinda suspect it is just intellectual laziness.

2018-11-01_09-49-33.pngI could go on and on about the possibilities but that is not a condition that can be quickly resolved nor is this the purpose of this post. Tomorrow is election day and unless those of us who can counter this group turn out they could give the current Oval Office occupant an unfettered final two years in office to accomplish his hateful and divisive agenda. We know that these Kool-aid folks are a minority but if the rest of us don’t do our job and vote tomorrow they could again have the say on what we will become as a nation.

There is estimated to be 100 million eligible voters who will not cast a ballot tomorrow!! How can a democracy survive without an informed and engaged populace? I voted early a couple of weeks ago, so I have done my part. It’s time for you to do yours. Your present or future children and grandchildren will thank you for that. Morality still matters… even if he says it doesn’t.

Benefit Of The Doubt… Wrong!!

There are many people who I have come across in my life that I give the benefit of the doubt to what they say.  For those who might be a little fuzzy on that term, here is an explanation:

2018-10-27_09-36-10.png

Even though I am a skeptic at heart I trust them to be telling me the truth. For the most part, they have earned my respect by their previous actions. One person who has had the exact opposite effect on me is the current Oval Office occupant (#CO3).  My modus operandi for him is to take whatever he says as being false until it is proven to be true.  I have been critical of past presidents but never to the degree of this one.

Part of my distrust and maybe even animosity toward #CO3 is my personal association with another extreme narcissist who was for limited times in my life my mother. Even at a young age, I realized that she often said things that I knew to be not true.  Most of her lies, like #CO3’s, centered around making herself the center of attention. I also came to realize later in life that she probably believed the lies she was telling.  I also came to realize that much of this was due to an inferiority complex.  She claimed she was a nurse even though she never likely graduated from high school.  Later in life being a nurse was not enough, she then claimed to be a doctor.

From these experiences, I have come to have a deep distrust of anything #CO3 says. I realize that when the attention is taken away from him he will do anything to get it back.  Absolutely everything HAS to be about him.  How we ever allowed such a person to occupy the highest office in the land is totally shocking to me!

I only pray that the coming election stifles any further damage he is doing to our democracy. Let him rule during his last two years if he is not impeached before then with strong checks and balances from the legislative branch.

Blame Is Not A Solution

It seems that everyone is trying to put the blame on others for our current dark times.  The current Oval Office occupant (#CO3) says that he is blaming the media and calling them the enemy of the people because they are blaming him.  Republicans are blaming Democrats and the other way around.  Blaming is easy, solving the problems is the hard part.

I am praying that the beginning of this hard part is coming next Tuesday. I am praying that those who have chosen to put their heads in the sand pull them out and vote for change. The status quo simply is not working.  Be part of the solution…

All Politics Is Local… Except It’s Not

2018-10-07_16-26-33.pngI know the old saying that “all politics is local” but at least in my case it really isn’t.  Yeah, I know that the county commissioner in my small Indiana shut down the recycling center because he said it wasn’t making enough money.  Realizing that he was a very Red Republican I always suspected that there was another reason he really wasn’t telling us about. It ends up that he wants the land that the recycling center is on to build a bigger jail for the county! We are one of the smallest counties in the State but he thinks more of us should be in jail.  The funny thing about all this was that soon after this all happened he was found guilty of a couple of felonies related to his abuse of office.  Of course, with his connections he was only given probation instead of jail time so I guess he won’t get the opportunity to use the new jail if/when it is built.

Except for this story and a few others, I really don’t pay much attention to what happens locally or even around the State. Almost all of my political attention has been at the national level for several years now.  That realization made me come to an epiphany lately.  Given that Indiana is a very Red State, I’m sure there are all kinds of cantankerous things going on in Indiana that I know nothing about that would give me heartburn if I did. I manage to dodge those bullets so why don’t I do the same thing for “Inside-the-beltway” politics?  Wouldn’t my life be happier?

I seem to bounce around between apathy and staying involved. Would it really matter if I just dropped out? But then again, what would I do with all the time I spent ranting about Radical-Right-Republicans and especially about #CO3.  🙂

The Times, They Are A Changin…

2018-10-15_09-20-00.pngIf you believe the latest polls you have to come to the conclusion that “The times, they are a changin” as Bob Dylan said in his 1964 album. But, given how wrong the polls were in 2016, seeing is believing this time around. If more of us moderates get off our butts and vote, it just may happen.

Of course, I am talking about the mid-term elections that are quickly approaching.  I personally will be voting early today. If it does happen and the rubber stampers who are currently in charge of Congress are voted out, then I think the Democrats need to seriously consider what it will take to break the gridlock that is strangling our democracy. If that doesn’t happen then I can see a scenario where both current parties implode. To me, the first step in this process for the Democrats is a fundamental change of leadership. Without a change in the roster, nothing new will happen.  That means replacements for Pelosi and Schumer.

It’s time for a new relatively untarnished batch of leaders to take over. If they don’t come from within the Democratic party then I hope they come from outside both parties.  I know I am jumping the gun here but it has been on my mind so I need to put it on paper so to speak. Let’s finish off this post with the verse from the above Dylan song relative to the topic.  Get out of the way or you will be steamrolled over.

Before you jump on me here, I admit that this is perhaps more a hope than it is a prediction.

Because She Is Good…

America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.  —  Alexis de Tocqueville

2018-08-15_09-19-32.pngIt has been a while since I last read “Democracy in America by de Tocqueville. I think his book written almost two centuries ago is as important in learning where we in America have been and where we are going as any on my bookshelf. I put a small bio here for those who don’t know about him. I have read this book at least a half dozen times.

The quote above was written in the early 1800s but at least until recently we have for the most part been “good”. Have we been perfect? Of course not, but at least we have strived to be good. I hope that after the current period plays out we can return to a degree of civility, truthfulness, and empathy as a country.  But, will we ever be deemed “great” again? That is the question of the day.

While our present government has shunned its responsibility to lead the way, much of the rest of the world continues without us. It is becoming more obvious as each year passes that global warming is a fact of life. Those who argue otherwise must be part of the flat-earth society. 🙂 Sadly, with #CO3 in office, we have lost our leadership role in fighting climate change.  He says coal is the answer!  How archaic… and ignorant.

But not to worry Europe and pretty much the rest of the world is jumping at the chance to become the new world leaders in this and many other areas.  Does it matter that the US is losing its dominant role in the world?  I kinda think there might be some good even come out of that fact.
