This post will start a series on the search for the U.S. Number one export.
It is widely known that the U.S. has a mammoth trade deficit. We import much more than we export. I can’t understand why this isn’t considered a factor in our current government deficit talks. Sending all those $billions to foreign makers seems just as, or maybe more detrimental, than the government borrowing money much of it from themselves via the S.S. trust fund and other somewhat devious, or at least contrived, methods.
Is there a commodity that the U.S. exports much more of than any other country?
Could our number one export be GREED?
The Russian economy is struggling to overcome years of communism but there are now more billionaires in Russian than almost any other country. We have taught them how to hoard money into gigantic personal wealth through some legal but mostly illegal means. The Robber Barons of about one hundred years ago were maybe the most vivid examples of greed but there is also the underworld making all that money for the illegal drugs that we can’t stop or manage to tax.
We seem to actually celebrate our greed. Look at Enron, Tyco, and several other CEO’s who have been indicted for crimes to enhance their wealth. They are household names and some are celebrities. There is even a weekly TV series called American Greed now. There seems to be a lot of material so it will be on the air for some time to come.
If we could just get a percentage from those who have learned the success of greed from us all our money worries would be over. But then again that would be a greedy thing to do I guess.
But what do I know.
