I see where it was 50 years ago this week that President Johnson declared “war on poverty”. This resulted in many social justice issues being addressed. Among them were:
Social Security Act 1965 (Created Medicare and Medicaid) – July 19, 1965
Food Stamp Act of 1964- August 31, 1964
The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 which created the Community Action Program, Job Corps and Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), centerpiece of the “war on poverty” – August 20, 1964
Elementary and Secondary Education Act – April 11, 1965
By today’s standard, which are pretty low indeed, it was remarkable that so much was accomplished in such a short period but, I understand that the House of Representatives currently plans to match that success in 2014. They have come up with a daring plan to drastically reduce poverty almost immediately!
Currently a family of four with less than $23,000 of income is considered below the poverty line. The House plan is to reduce that official level to $12,000…. problem solved… What’s next….
