The Right Tool…

I have always been a firm believer in using the right tool for the job. This applies to almost all aspects of my life. If I have a nut to remove from a bolt, I use either a wrench or a socket. I would never consider using a pair of pliers, even if it meant saving another trip to my workshop/barn. It used to drive my wife crazy when I told her I had to go into town to get a new tool. She said, “You got a barn full of tools, why do you need another one?” I gave up a long time ago trying to explain to her why I need a new tool, now I just say “because I do”.

Tools are not just wrenches (spanners as my British friends call them) and such, they are needed in many aspects of daily life. Because I love to cook, I collected a myriad of kitchen gadgets until my wife finally put her foot down and said NO MORE!! But even then, I managed to sneak a few more in. 😎

Fast-forward to the latest story on tools.

As some of you know, I am on a new project in my life, and that is to be more creative in the visual arts area. I am kinda proud to call myself a wordsmith, but have always been envious of those who can put ink to paper and create something new.

As usual, I have spent a couple of months on this new project investigating what areas I want to pursue. As a result, the list has grown from two to seven.

  1. Abstracts
  2. Architecture
  3. Doodling
  4. Sketching
  5. Photography
  6. Graphic Design
  7. Zen Art

It will take a future post to try to explain this list further, but what they have in common is that they require a new list of tools to be accumulated. I already have a nice drawing board with a parallel bar and some generic templates, and I am currently gathering pens, pencils, templates, stencils, and other things. Who knew it would take so many tools to be artsy. 😵‍💫

I am even to the point that I am considering reorganizing my hobby/office area to expand my artsy area. It is getting too full of all my new tools 🙃. You could say that I have created chaos in my current life, but to me, that is good news. It means I am living out my mantra of NEVER stop learning, even if it does mean more tools.

I guess I need to close out this post with a little sanity. Yeah, I know, just a pencil and a piece of paper would do the job, and I started out that way. But for me, if you are going to do the job “right”, you just have to have the right tools.
