Veggies Are Good For You

I have had many veggie gardens in my life. I can remember the first one when I was a six-year-old. It was 1952, and we had just moved to a new tract house in the suburbs that costs $14,000. The garden was no bigger than 8′ x 8′ but that was enough for some radishes, leaf lettuce, and a few other things that I don’t remember.

Except for my college years, I have always had a garden. Being a person with Autism, although I didn’t know it at the time, they were always well planned out. The biggest veggie garden was during our time in a rental house on the farm in the early 1960s. That garden was about 30′ x 60′ and most of it was taken up by potatoes, corn, and tomatoes. Dad just didn’t like all that fancy food.

I guess like if you have kids, you are not supposed to have a favorite garden, but if I did, my favorite garden would be the one in the picture above. A fancy fence to keep out the critters, and the raised beds were a dream come true. I had that garden for about seven years, and then it was off to New Jersey, as that was where my job was going. NJ bragged about their tomatoes, but I didn’t think they were even in the same league as Midwest tomatoes.
