Mosaic of Life #75 The Thing About Orchids

It has been a while since I posted an artsy mosaic, so here goes. Almost all my life I have had a green thumb, but that was mostly the outdoor variety. I had my first veggie garden before I was 8 years old. Of course, I don’t specifically remember all those early childhood dates, but I do use one reference to establish the date. In 1955, my mother abandoned us to looker for greener pastures, and I do remember not too long before that is when I was raising radishes, green onions, and leaf lettuce in a small plot in the backyard.

When we moved to outside a small rural town about 40 miles away in 1959, my garden grew by leaps and bounds. I was raising corn and potatoes, in addition to my starter crops. Most of my life I have had a garden. In those years when I didn’t, it was an indoor variety. Three years ago, when I first joined my RetCom (retirement community) I bought a succulent plant that the garden club was selling. Three years later, I now have about a dozen different potted plants that are doing just fine, thank you.

Finally, getting to the purpose of this post, I have tried my hand and several different species, but one thing I will never attempt to raise is orchids. They are just too fussy for me. They demand just the right amount of water, sunlight, and temperature. Any deviation and they quickly let you know.

I enjoy my indoor garden here at my RetCom, but I will not be a slave to it! So, orchids will just have to find another home. I know, you are likely asking “then where did the picture above come from?” As usual, it was being delivered to another resident, and I quickly snapped a shot before it was delivered.
