Up On The Mountain…..

I have a favorite place at our homestead where I tend to spend hours at a time in the Spring and Summer months. Since it is the highest place on our property I call it “Up on the mountain”. I go up there to lay on my glider/swing and read the latest book or magazine. And of course I take an occasional nap there; OK if you insist on knowing the truth I take frequent naps there. :)

My wife knows when I say “I am going up on the mountain” that she probably won’t see me for a couple of hours. Even my Basset Hound Beulah knows the term as she enjoys taking her naps there with me. I often say I am going up on the mountain to seek the meaning of life and I actually do find it there sometimes. With God’s beautiful nature surrounding me on the mountain I get enveloped in his world. I seem to come to more resolutions surrounding the difficulties in my life while I am “up on the mountain”.

Sitting quietly and listening to God is something that I wished I had learned much earlier in life. I learned this practice from my Quaker friends and authors. About the only time we tend to talk with God is when we want something from him or maybe that one hour a week in a local church.  Quakers don’t so much believe that we should necessarily talk to God as much as we should listen for his messages. I get a lot of messages coming my way during my quiet time on my mountain.

When we are busy with our sixty hour a week job we don’t often put time aside for just listening. But that should be one of the top items on our priority list when we are at least in our senior years. So, if you don’t have an “on the mountain” spot I would highly advise you to seek one out. It does wonders for body and soul. OK, I’m on my way “up to the mountain” now so don’t expect any comment responses for a couple of hours.

And the journey goes on….

  1. If I had a “mountain” like that with such a calming view I might be gone for quite awhile. Listening to the silence and the sounds of nature really help empty the mind of silly worries and concerns.

    Are you back yet?

  2. Yeah, I’m back. While up on the mountain this morning my 2 1/2 acres of grass were telling me they need mowed. So that is where I spent a good deal of today doing that. That and the usual required maintenance of our 1925 farm house.

Previously you have asked me how I can run so many blogs and keep them fresh. Well, most of the ideas for posts come while I am “up on the mountain”. I always have a notepad and pencil to scribble them down and then flesh them out later.
