He Voted Nay……

?????????????????????????????????????????????????I just read an article in the local paper where my congressman proudly announced that he voted to default on our nation’s debt this week.  Of course living blue in a red State it was not in the least surprising.  I am constantly voting against these yahoos who would rather the country default than to give up a small piece of their “principles”. What a joke.

I intend to send him an email to tell him that I am happy that at least some of those in his party  had the courage to choose to pay our debts instead of defaulting.  In some macabre sort of way I kind of wished that the GOP had gotten their way so that they, and especially their supporters, could see the damage they had done!

I’m sure most of the people who read this article in the paper cheered him for his inaction. Living blue in a red State sure is frustrating…

  1. Send the email. He needs to know you are out there watching. If it ends up that he gets are more emails going the other way you need to continue to bang the drum, but accept that it is an electorate that is involved and he represents the majority. Right?

  2. BTW – two completely different emails came out of our household to our representatives, including a “I’ll never vote for you again” to one of our Senators. :)

  3. RJ – I too in some respects was actually hoping that we would “go over” the edge into a technical default in order for people to understand that there are consequences to their positions. If the stock market had a bad few days, if interest rates jumped up and if bond funds had to drop using Treasuries in their portfolio’s for a few days….people may see the danger of playing Russian Roulette with our economy for political gain. I worry that Wall Street’s non-reaction to date actually lets the Washington fanatics think they can get closer and closer to that edge without suffering any consequences. And one of these days, they will slip over and we will all see what the damage will be to all of us. And guess what..we will get to go through this drama again in 2-3 months if they don’t come up with an agreement. However, you would hope that the more often they do this throughout 2014 with mid-term elections coming up that someone would begin to worry that a large turnout of angry voters in that election may tip the scale and some of these radical Republicans will actually find themselves out there looking for work themselves. I wonder if they would be taking advantage of whatever safety net programs they’re eligible for at that point? Mike

    1. That’s kind of my feeling too. Let them see the consequences….

I just read that in the 2012 house elections that there were a million more votes cast for Democrats than there were for Republicans. But since gerrymandering is now down to a science more Republicans were elected. I suspect it will remain this way for some time to come. That is until someone dictates that congressional districts are laid out with some sanity in mind. Maybe the Supreme Court but I kind of doubt that unless there are a few unexpected deaths there.
