Embracing the ‘Feminine Side’ of God…

Angel sculpture. The masculine side of God is something to be admired. But it is the feminine side that draws love out of me. It is this feminine side of God I find in Jesus that makes me want to sing duets with Him. When I think about the feminine in Him, I want to throw out my arms and be loved….

Society has brought me up to suppress the so-called feminine dimensions of my humanness. But when Jesus makes me whole, both sides of who I am meant to be will be fully realized. Then, and only then, will I be fully able to love Jesus and be fully able to accept His love for me. Until I accept the feminine in my humanness, there will be a part of me that cannot receive the Lord’s love. SOURCE: Embracing the ‘Feminine Side’ of God | Tony Campolo | Red Letter Christians.

I have been thinking about the feminine side of God and myself for a few months now so the article from which the above quote came from got my attention. It is widely acknowledged in most philosophical systems that each of us have a masculine and a feminine side and that a balance between these two sides is necessary for a full healthy life. Too much of one at the expense of the other is detrimental to our very existence as a person, a country, and even a world.

Some call it masculine/feminine others call it yin/yank and still others by different names. I have been spending quite a bit of time lately studying this concept and will be reporting on what I have found in some near future posts. For now let’s get a little foundational work done.

The culture of the western world is predominately about the masculine side of man.  We are all about aggressiveness, competition and winning. Whereas in the eastern world it is almost a reversal. This is one of the primary reasons there is so much misunderstanding among these two parts of our globe.  Asians just can’t understand the western world’s fixation on wealth, power and guns and we in the U.S. and E. U. can’t understand the priority of inner-peace and tranquility of much of the eastern world.

For my study I am going to use the words yin/yang to describe this dichotomy of existence. For one thing it is easier to use those shorter words and for another it is to shy away from the “sissy” mentality that the word feminine portrays in the yang oriented west.Yin is absolutely nothing about being a sissy.

I suspect that for most of my readers the concept of yin/yang is somewhat unfamiliar so I will be trying to teach you a little about that. Since I know myself more than I do anyone else I will bravely, or maybe stupidly, use me as an example of this balance. I will try to delve into my inner being for examples. More on that in future posts.  To make it easier to find previous posts in this area I now have a yin/yang category in the “About Life” header above. Let’s have some fun exploring this concept of life. I think we can all learn something about ourselves from it.

  1. Although I do not agree with you that the eastern cultures are more “feminine”( we, westerners, simply do not read their history of wars), I do agree that people tend to be happier when they are permitted to be balanced. I read a lot of Merton when I was younger and began to see how quieting oneself and permitting both side to work together brings a more peaceful existence.

    1. I will get into this idea of “feminine” more in later posts. To the western world that word implies “sissy” and that is not the case in reality. As to wars, yeah they happen everywhere… More on these things later…
