53 Years Ago Today…

53 years ago today, I started my corporate work life. I was a naive, freshly minted engineer who wasn’t sure I had anything to contribute. But the pay was good. I had no idea how I would spend all that $9,800 annual pay.

I had a lot more hair back then, and of course, back then ties were not optional in the engineering organization. I spent 30 years there, and then started my second career as a custom furniture maker. That 30 years has provided me with a nice monthly pension that still tides me over.

  1. Started out here as a budding engineer fifty-five years ago, with a brand new wife a week after graduation. Same starting pay — was thrilled when my first pay raise pushed me over $10,000. So much money :-)

Think I even had the same tie, and also a full head of hair. Also had the pen in the pocket, along with a small screwdriver – both in a pocket protector. Owned a slide rule too. So geeky.

I lasted 20 years in corporate life, until breaking free to start a consulting firm with a friend. Great fun – our version of a cabinet shop, I suppose. All things considered, it has been quite the trip.

Thanks for sharing the memories, fellow engineer.
