Rest In Peace??

Go to any cemetery around and you will find letters RIP abundantly. Of course we know that they stand for “Rest In Peace”. But, with my “Question Everything” mantra, I don’t see the point? When we are dead and in our grave, do we really have any choice in the matter?

I think a better way to look at it is to promote peace while we are still above the earth. Why not learn to

Over the years, I have studied many different versions of Christianity, and I am convinced that Quakers, or at least some of them, are about the only version who live out a “Live In Peace” strategy. They say that is the primary reason we are on the earth.

  1. As a Quaker in the liberal unprogrammed tradition, i believe our existence ends with death, so RIP has little meaning. Yes, one should address living in peace for all of humankind as one’s objective. This means objectively working to remove the injustices of this world, not simply avoiding being party to those injustices.

    1. I was hoping you would chime in, Barry. I count on you to set me straight when it comes to Friends. I like the idea of “objectively working to remove injustices”.

I’m starting to lean to the idea that our soul (whatever that is) is eternal, but our consciousness ceases to exist when we die.
