Diversity – The Definition

The definition of diversity is to be diverse, (pun intended) so I show you here what diverse means. This gives a pretty good description, but maybe it is more important to understand what is the opposite of diverse. Some of the opposites are: uniformity, sameness, monotony, drabness, dullness, tedium. If I had to choose between diverse, and not diverse, I would certainly choose the former.

I can’t imagine going through a life of sameness and monotony, where almost everything and every one is the same, and those who aren’t are quickly shown the door. It just doesn’t appeal to me to live in a lifelong “Vanilla World”. Yeah, when I was growing up in a small rural town, almost everyone looked and acted the same. It wasn’t until I went to college that I discovered the diversity of life.

To me, the opposite of diversity is tribalism. The only thing that comes from that state is constant warfare with everyone not part of our tribe. Tribalism means being in a constant state of fear of being attacked by “those other people”. When we finally realize the “We are all in this together” the sooner we will hall find happiness and security.

Being in a diverse environment doesn’t mean that we have to agree with what everyone else says, in fact, it really means the opposite. It means that we can finally quit trying to force everyone else to believe as we do. It means that we coexist with those who might think quite differently. As long that they don’t interfere with us, we won’t interfere with them.

A world of coexisting is much better than a world at constant war.
