Posterity?

I am a wordsmith who likes to learn a new word every day. It also makes me a picky writer, in that if I see a word that is just not quite right, I have to change it.

Walt Whitman’s famous book entitled “Leaves of Grass” comes to mind in this regard. It was originally published in 1855, but he continuously changed/corrected it until his death about 35 years later. I will secretly admit that I do much the same for many of my 5000+ posts here on RJsCorner. When I see something that is just not “quite” right I have written years ago, I have to change it. When I started this blog back in 2008, there were no AI apps working in the background showing me where to add commas, or words spelled wrong. When I run across those types of things in early posts I often correct them.

Maybe I am subconsciously thinking that what I write here is meant for posterity, or perhaps my OCD just can’t stand to see grammatical errors. It is probably six of one and half dozen of the other. Which brings me to the point of this post.

I need a new project. Now that my mosaic wall is fully reconfigured, there seems to be nothing of any consequence on my agenda. When I don’t have an agenda, depression seems to frequently take its place. For that reason, I have decided to turn RJsMosaic into a book. I have never tried to publish anything beyond my daily blog posts, so this will be a challenge for me.

The first step has been to find the right app to accomplish the task. After several days of looking at all my options, I have decided to go with a tool that I have been using for some time called Affinity Publisher V2. I have been using it to format all my posts on RJsMosaic, but that has been only one page at a time. Hidden in the background, at least to me, are an abundance of tools to do full-size graphic oriented books.

So, what I am going to do is to put my mosaic posts, presently 121 of them, in numerical order and in a standard format of facing pages of mosaic pictures and associated text. Where a twist comes in is that I will be adding and modifying what the original posts provided as I see fit. Often times when I am reading an original post, other thoughts come to mind. This will be my opportunity to make my posts better than the original. I will also be re-orienting the posts to focus more on life stories as well as mosaics.

Like I said, the wordsmith in me just can’t stand seeing the “wrong” word in something I write or have written in the past. So, the book RJsMosaic of Life will be my Leaves of Grass. Right now, I don’t intend to actually publish a paper book, I will limit it to a .pdf version and eventually maybe a free e-book on Amazon.

This ought to keep me busy, and therefore keep my depression at bay for quite a while. I just hate down-time, so this just might do the trick for the foreseeable future. If you have any ideas on this subject, I certainly welcome them.

  1. I can so relate to the feeling of gloom or depression between projects.

I was in that position just last month, searching for something new to tackle. Staying inside because of the 110 degree days, doing little more than reading or playing guitar had gotten to me.

Your idea of a book focused on your mosaics is a tremendous idea. You get to learn something new and produce an end-product that will please others.

    1. RJsMosaic has been a fun project. I now have 121 of a total possible of 180 done. I will continue working on the wall, but the book is another separate matter. The mosaics will be pretty much as is, but the text might make a severe change to be more “life stories” in nature.
Since I am an elder orphan, I don’t have a targeted audience for the book, so I will try to make it entertaining for a broader category of readers. That alone will be fun and challenging.
