Stupidity, Insanity & Cluttered Desks……

Eisnstein 1Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe. ~ Albert Einstein

Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. ~ Albert Einstein

If a cluttered desk is that of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk? ~ Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was one of my first heroes in life. His biography was one of the first “really long” books I read in my early life. I always felt an almost kindred relationship with him. ¬†I think maybe I am an “ignorant” version of him. From his early life he, like me, was always asking “why?”. ¬†If he were a kid today I’m sure he would be diagnosed as ADD; I’m sure I would have too. So, with this post I want to bring up a few of his quotes that inspire me.

The first quote talks about human stupidity and he is certainly right in his observation. Before you run off in disagreement let’s look at what the definition of stupidity is:

a poor abidflity to understand or to profit from experience

We human beings, it seems especially those of us in the U.S. just don’t seem to be able to learn from our experiences. ¬†As you can now see the second quote is very much in line with the first. ¬† Stupidity and Insanity seem to have pretty much the same meaning when taken in this context. ¬†We make the same mistakes over and over again and just can’t seem to understand why things aren’t different.

I like Einstein am a pragmatist. That is I believe in looking at whatever works when it comes to problem solving. I don’t in the least bit hesitate to use someone else’s ideas to solve the problems at hand. All of Einstein’s theories were built on the back of others who came before him. He learned from them and then went on from there. ¬†We should all learn that lesson from him.

The third quote caught my eye because my study is currently a total mess. I will likely spend much of today trying to seek at least a little orderliness to this mess. I definitely don’t plan to empty it but just to unclutter it a little. ūüôā
