The Times They Are A Changing….

2014-04-22_09-45-50Come gather ’round people Wherever you roam

And admit that the waters Around you have grown

And accept it that soon You’ll be drenched to the bone If your time to you is worth savin’

Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone

For the times they are a-changin’

Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen

And keep your eyes wide The chance won’t come again

And don’t speak too soon For the wheel’s still in spin

And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’

For the loser now will be later to win

For the times they are a-changin’

Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don’t stand in the doorway

Don’t block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled

There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’

It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls

For the times they are a-changin’

Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land

And don’t criticize What you can’t understand

Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command

Your old road is rapidly agin’

Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand

For the times they are a-changin’

Ok, I will admit it here, if you haven’t heard it already, I was a big Dylan fan in my college years. He seemed to say the things I was feeling much more accurately than anyone else.  I took up the guitar so I could learn to play many of his songs. The one above is perhaps my favorite.

A lot did change in the 1960’s. We Baby Boomers for the most part rejected much of the old logic and traditions of our elder and brought on a new reality. There were many around who fought against this trend but they for the most part were left by the wayside.

I see what is beginning to happen today mirrors much of what I lived through during those years. Bob Dylan’s words above ring as true today as they did when he wrote them in 1963. Much of our country is rapidly changing and I believe for the most part for the better.  We are becoming a much more diversified population. In the religious realm many of those who  are now about the same age as I was in the 1960s are starting to question why they must only “believe” certain things in order to see God.  These kids believe they must live out their spiritual selves instead of just reciting some words. Hooray for them. They see the utter foolishness of our current political system and know there must be a better way.  Contrary to the old saying that the only one who wants to see change is a wet baby, They are actually embracing change.

The things are indeed rapidly changing and the pace of change will do nothing but get even faster in the coming years.

Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside and it is ragin’
It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
