About Bernie…

In 2008 when I joined the Obama bandwagon I had this underlying suspicion that he was more about hype than substance. That he was saying things he knew would arouse me but was mainly saying them to get elected. He, like Bill Clinton and George Bush before him, didn’t really speak the words from his heart. You can’t say that about Bernie.

Sanders has a long track record of doing what he says. He also has a record of accomplishments that proves him to be a pragmatist that I believe this country seriously needs today. He votes  based on substance, not party. We have way too much “party” in our politics today.

It seems strange that so many of us are disgusted with the way our current political system operates but are just too fearful of voting for alternatives. Until we vote the IN’s out we will never see any significant progress in our way of doing government.

No, Bernie won’t win any beauty contest. He is not the strapping figures of John Kennedy or even Ronald Reagan. If we really want change then we must vote for it and I am coming to believe that Bernie might be the first step in that process.

2016-02-06_10-59-15.pngIt bothers me that Hillary has made millions of dollars making speeches to Wall Street firms and then refuses to release any words she said to them.  It should be absolutely clear to anyone who has been paying even the slightest attention that Bernie has no fans on Wall Street and won’t be asked to give a speech there anytime soon.

I love what Mark Shields said on a recent PBS Newshour. I will try to paraphrase it here:

The mortgage crisis was a terrible thing so we must hunt down those people who perpetrated this fraud and give them billions of dollars.

Bernie and Elizabeth Warren seem to be the only two people in congress who are upset as I and many other are by this logic. Billions were given to pull them out of the troubles they caused and not one person was ever indicted for the trillions it cost the American taxpayer!  I recognize that partisan politics has just become increasingly extreme since the Reagan years. We HAVE to do something to pull it back to some level of sanity if we hope to even exist.

To close out this post, I just want to be able to vote for a person who I know is true to his word and actually believes what he says.  Not a person who says what he thinks will get him elected simply because he/she craves the power of the office. I want to be able to vote for a person with “true” passion for the people.

Right now I am coming to believe that Bernie is the only person currently in this race to meet that objective. Maybe he can’t be elected but we will never know until we try….

  1. As far as I can tell, Bernie is the only candidate with real integrity. He doesn’t flip flop and say what is expedient in the moment like so many others. If people disagree, then so be it. They say he can’t possibly get any of his progressive ideas done…but why not? He’s not afraid to try, why are we? Because it’s just plain easier and cheaper to close out eyes or look the other way while things go on as usual. Sure, Hillary has tons of experience in foreign policy and beyond. But, so what? People will vote for her because she looks and sounds “safe”. She’s not as crazy as the Repulican candidates, she has considerable knowledge of the working of Washington…she won’t make any scary and radical changes. In spite of all the noise the media makes and a few people who chant and carry sign, the American voters are complacent and afraid to change…even in their own best interests. Bernie might fail but he might not…I hope we can find the courage to support him in his efforts to change the political and economic systems for the better. We can do better. (And wouldn’t it be wonderful to have Elizabeth Warren as his VP?)

  2. Spot on Jane!! I think maybe the turning point is coming in our country. There are just too may people who are fed up with the current political establishments. Their candidates are just too shallow for our times. I think that is what is accountable for the Trump mania going around right now and especially the Rubio Robot attacks. ANYONE BUT THE CURRENT INSIDERS…. Maybe a Trump vs Sanders election would be good for the country. I would either destroy the current parties or make them severely reform.

I would love to see it the other way around Warren/Sanders but I will take any combination I can get.

  3. In my thoughts the only two that are authentic are Bernie and Rubio. Both have the rags to running for President immigrant experience. Rubio will get drummed down by the establishment for doing normal campaign stuff. Bernie will get drummed (but not down) by doing the out of the ordinary – speaking from the heart and brain.
I actually see Bernie as much more of a follow on President of the first Obama term. The Obama I voted for. Remember that term- when Obama pleaded with his own party for real change? Single payer health care? Real reform in the financial sector? They didn’t move forward with him- lost the legislative branches and he is reduced to executive mandates.
But the Democrats are afraid- of giving up their money&power- very afraid. I figure they will vote in Hillary and we will get more of nothing (except extravagant trips to cool countries).
I agree- Trump vs Bernie. I can see it. An actual discussion of which way the country should go. Since I know way more true independents then most—Bernie has a good chance.

    1. Thanks for the thoughts Jan. I think I learned my less on voting in an inexperienced person to the Oval office. Rubio just seems so canned to me. I thought that even before the Christie attacks. 🙂

Rubio seems to be even more naive and less experience is that Obama eight years ago. I try not to make the same mistake twice.

I want someone I KNOW will be true to his words!! I think the perfect dream situation is that Sanders would make Warren his running mate and then vowed to be a one-term president. That would give her the experience she doesn’t think she has for the Oval office and it would allow Bernie to now worry about being re-elected and just do what he know is necessary for our country…
