Sex and the Church

I don’t know why I have been thinking about this lately. Maybe it is something to do with having recently read a Sojourners magazine. But I think I have figured out the mentality behind the church’s position on sexuality. That is what this post is all about.

Before I get down to the subject at hand I want to tell you up front that I am not attacking religion in general or a particular version of it with this post. This is meant to be a lighthearted discussion, as taught to me by my hero Will Rogers, of how stuck we can be with our beliefs even after they are repudiated to one degree or another.

Ok, Let’s look at some religious practices regarding sex. ๐Ÿคญ

I won’t use the most descriptive word here but I think you know what I am talking about. ๐Ÿฅด I was taught in Catholic grade school that this activity was a sin. I was too young to know what the priest was talking about at the time but I knew it was serious as he separated the boys from the girls before giving us this lecture. Sexual self-gratification would doom you to purgatory and maybe even hell if you did it.

Ban on Contraceptives

I don’t know how long this ban has been in effect but I suspect it has been as long as the product mentioned has existed. To the church, nothing should prevent the creation of another human being. After all isn’t that what sex is supposed to be all about? ๐Ÿ˜‡

I think this ban is one of those things that has brought about the term Cafeteria Catholics. Statistics have shown the 98% of Catholic women have used or regularly use contraceptives.

Somewhere in the ancient documents there was the mention of a man sleeping with a man and that eventually lead to the religious belief that homosexuality was a sin against God.

Sex Outside of Marriage

It is a sin to have sex with anyone if they are not married. That includes a wide swath of activities, but the command is much the same. “DON’T DO IT”.

I don’t know why the people in religions who make up all these rules haven’t gotten around to declaring that Old people having sex should also be a sin as there is no possibility of creating a child. Maybe that is some for a future decider is to do?

I am going to take a leap here and say that many religions see the only valid reason for sex is to propagate the species. To them personal pleasure is, if anything, an unnecessary side effect to the act. ๐Ÿคจ

The God that I have in my mind believes otherwise. God did not make the sexual act only for procreating. It is pleasurable for a reason.

Lets de-sin these practices. I know that is not a word except in my mind, but I will use it anyway. ๐Ÿ˜† One of my primary definitions of God is that he is love. Who says that two people can’t love each other except under church approved conditions?

I think I am going to look a little deeper into this via the video series shown below.

Finally, I want to clue these church deciders in on a little secret. They complain about how they are constantly losing membership now and then wonder why. Maybe one of the reasons is because almost everyone has discovered that sex is a quite pleasurable thing and are tired of being told to quit enjoying it. ๐Ÿ˜
