Some Of Us Never Get Old

I’ve been taking myself too seriously lately, and that results in periods of depression. So, it’s time to lighten up a little and treat life as the joke it is. 😎

Last week I toured the State of Iowa in my µRV. I focused on living history type sites during this trip. I visited six different places, and found two that were a total bust, a three that were enjoyable, and one worth the trip. But, the trip itself was really not about the places I visited, but instead, just to get away to a different scenery for a while. I am coming to feel comfortable here in my RetCom, but the sameness every day often results in boredom.

To be truthful, I have never really enjoyed RV camping. I built my µRV primarily as a “Boat In The Basement” type thing. I simply love puttering, and my 32 x 48 ft pole barn at the homestead just demanded that I take my old furniture delivery truck and turn it into a tiny RV. That was about a five-year project that has been one of the most enjoyable parts of retirement.

One of the things about camping is the showers are never much good. I stayed at three State Parks, and Iowa has invented another annoyance related to showers. There is a push button in the shower that turns on the water for about 30 seconds, and then must be pushed again, and again, and again. To me, RV camping is simply a place to spend the night and not much else. I see some people stay at their RV site for a week or more. That is simply not me.

I admit that I got into some bad habits from the start related to my µRV travels, and just can’t seem to break that routine. Eighty percent of the daylight time away is spent on the road getting from one place to another. When I settle down for the night, I seem to spend most of that time watching DVDs. I really wanted to do some serious reading this time, but just couldn’t make that happen.

I don’t know how many RV trips I have left in me? Spending a hundred bucks a day on gas is kinda self-defeating. For another, my body just doesn’t seem to tolerate all the messed up U.S. roads. I think I am going to have to try something different for my next “get away from home” trip.

Perhaps the primary obstacle to future trips is BTDT.

“Been There, Done That”.

I am simply running out of places that I want to visit. If you got any suggestions, I would be glad to hear them.

I used up my queue of posts here at RJsCorner during this trip, so I will likely be a while before I get back to a regular posting schedule.

    1. Thanks for the article and the long-time readership, Kathy. I know that captions via eyeglasses has been a sci-fi thing for quite some time, but smartphone voice to text is making tremendous strides the last few years. For the first 30 years of my deaf life, I depended on a notepad and pencil without much success. People just didn’t want to take the time to write for me. In the last three years, smartphone apps have improved from maybe 50% accurate to over 90%. Actually, I have three different apps that work best in different situations.

As far as ASL is concerned, since I chose to remain in the hearing world, I am seldom around people who use ASL, so that would not have helped much. Less than 1% of the hearing population knows ASL. My wife communicated with me via Signed English, which is using ASL signs in English word order, and I talked to her. Now that she has been gone for about two years, I am starting to lose many of the signs I once knew.
