Those who supposedly know more than the rest of us, think that everything can be explained by the Bell shaped curve. Just to prove that, to the right, I give you a small sampling of its use. If the bell shaped curve is good at explaining so many different things, maybe it will be a good way to understand of diversity.
The part of diversity that I am seriously interested in is the Autism Spectrum. They say that the Autism Spectrum is broad indeed, so you can’t simply pick just one person on it to be representative of the rest. I certainly agree with that, but I am going to go one giant step beyond that explanation.
I kinda believe that EVERYONE who has a brain is on the Autism spectrum, all 8.1 billion of us. After all as we see Autism now, it is a neurological thing. It’s about how that 3 lb organ between our ears controls how we see and respond to almost everything. I find it ironic that the word Autism was originally coined in 1911 to describe people with schizophrenia. It wasn’t until 1961 that that changed.
Some people seem to think that a condition doesn’t exist before it was named, but I can tell you with some certainty that is not the case. I suspect that there were Autistic people hundreds, if not thousands of years before 1961.
I guess, in 1961 the scientific community believed that this was something new that just sprang up, as even today, most attention to Autism is totally on children and how to cure them of this condition. There is little, if any study of the rest of us.
I can see similarities between being gay and being Autistic. Those who want both to go away think it is a condition that can be cured. Fortunately, most people today realize that is total fantasy.
Finishing up this post the way it began, everyone is on the Autism Spectrum, so let’s just rename it the Human Spectrum and admit that somethings are a result of just different wiring of our brains. We should call that
DIVERSITY
and celebrate it instead of trying to cure it.
