We All Need Something That Makes Us Jump Out Of Bed In The Morning.

Sometimes, especially for us retired folks, need a reason to jump out of bed in the mornings. Our 9-5 job did the trick during our working years, but when they are gone there needs to be something that replaces them. Something that rouses us from our slumber. I know, as a 78 year-old guy living in a retirement home, the days seem to blend together. If it weren’t for my Apple Watch buzzing me throughout the day reminding me to do this or that, I wouldn’t likely know one day from the next.

Lately, my karma has been dressed up with no place to go. Nothing new excites me right now. As things in my life get mundane, can I say boring, I like a kid, need to constantly stimulated with new things. This is a curse I have carried throughout my life. Whenever I get proficient at something, it’s time to move on to the next thing. If there is no “next thing” I get depressed. I can stand the mundane as long as it is counterbalanced with something new and challenging.

When I hear stories about people proudly proclaiming they have been doing the same thing for 35 years, I totally believe that if I did the same thing for 35 years I would have died of boredom long before that.

Blogging has been a constant in my life since I started RJsCorner some 16 years ago. I have written over 5600 posts there. But, it has changed dramatically over that time. You could say RJsCorner is part of my foundation in my life. But I need something else. Something fresh, something to learn.

For the last six months that something has been RJsMosaics. I have now generated almost 120 mosaics and the corresponding stories behind each one. I love the process of taking photos and turning them into other forms of art. I also love the short stories that come to mind under each mosaic. These are good things that I will continue to do for sometime to come. But, the process is becoming somewhat routine now. I need something to rouse me from my slumber.

One of the major problems with getting old is that our faculties are constantly eroding. I used to read a book a week, but now that is just too physically challenging for me. Anything below a font size of 14 is difficult to read. For that reason all my books and reading materials are electronic, so that I can read them at any size I desire. But, that doesn’t take care of some of the other things.

Maybe I should resolve myself to life in a straight and narrow slow lane. No more looking beyond the curve in the road ahead. Maybe it’s time to just recognize that anything other than that is just a dream now.

  1. Trust me.There is very little risk you will ever “settle” for the straight and narrow slow lane for very long.

All of us need an occasional period of downtime, of no compeling idea pushing us forward.

But, of all the folks I know, your recharge state is usually a brief one. Frankly, I depend on you to kick-start my journey every now and then.

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Bob. In fact I already have a creative project in the works. It is short lived, maybe a a week or so, but that is enough for now. I think I need to get out of my apartment more. That one I am still working on.

    2. Bob, it is nice to see your reply to RJ here. I can’t remember if I found you after reading RJ, but think I found RJ after reading your blog for a while. I was a long time reader of your blog and miss seeing your regular thoughts. Hope you are still well and doing interesting things.

BTW, I’m writing. This to you from a Fast train between Shanghai and Beijing. This is our first visit back to China to see our granddaughter here since Covid. It is a trip of our dreams, as our daughter’s family of 4 is with us this time and all three of our grandchildren are FINALLY (at ages 12, 12 and 10) getting to meet in person

Stay well and know that you have followers who would enjoy hearing from you again
