I know it depends on your age but to me these words brought to mind a popular song by Kenny Rogers in 1978 entitled “The Gambler”. Who knew the words came from Voltaire in the early 1700s.
The thing that many people don’t accept is that many of us have some serious adversities in life. It might be family related or maybe challenging personal health issues. Sometimes it is a result of poor decisions previously made.
There are even those who have issues due to wealth shielding them from true experiences. Those are the kind of issues I would like to have! (JUST KIDDING).
When you think you are the only one with serious life issues, then maybe one of your issues is a lack of empathy.
Empathy is sometimes downplayed, as a sign of weakness, or being “soft.”
I disagree. I see empathy as a strong indicator of basic humanity, and something seriously lacking in too many of us.

As usual, I couldn’t agree more Bob. To me selfishness and lack of empathy are pretty much the same. It just seems so strange to me that those in the U.S. who proudly proclaim to be white evangelicals are the ones who seem to lack any sign of empathy.
