An Anatomy Lesson From An 80 Year-Old

The post today is going to be about chairs. I know the title says something different, but I promise the link between chairs and anatomy will become clear pretty quickly.

I have noticed for a few months now that my office chair is becoming more and more uncomfortable. The main problem is that the arms of the chair are just too high even when adjusted to the lowest level. I have had the chair for about 15 years now, so you might think I should have noticed this problem before. I will clue you in on a little secret I don’t think I have mentioned here at RJsCorner.

I am now five inches shorter in height than when I bought the chair now being replaced.

I’ve never had much interest in biology or anatomy stuff so I am speaking here as a rank amateur, but when has that ever stopped me. I was told about 15 years ago that I had osteoporosis. But, even with osteoporosis, shrinking five inches is NOT normal. But, then again, nothing about me has ever seemed to be normal, so why should I be surprised. I have now come to the point where practically all my vertebrae have compression fractures. That distance between my butt and my elbows is now five inches shorter which means my chair armrests are effectively 5 inches higher.

The height of the arm rests are important to me because I use a trackpad when I am on my Mac, which is often 6 – 8 hours a day. I rest my elbow on the chair armrest so my arm isn’t hanging in space. The “space hanging” thing can result in somewhat severe neck and shoulder pain. I noticed that that pain happens much more frequently now.

The “Staples” Office supply store that was less than a mile away closed this Spring, so I had to call a friend to take me to the “Office Supply” store on the other side of town. Since I had already checked out office chairs on the website. I went to the one I chose on-line. It proved to be a “perfect fit”.

BTW… I am a frequent flyer when it comes to Amazon, but I have learned from experience that you don’t buy ergonometric things from them. Most everything they sell now comes from China and I don’t think they even know what ergonometric means.  I am also getting tired of buying things from Amazon that on-line looks like a car but when it comes it is the size of a teacup. Maybe it’s about time to start looking for alternative to Amazon… but then again, maybe it is too late?
