Took this shot yesterday as I was taking Beulah, our Basset Hound, for a walk around our homestead. We have about six inches of snow on the ground so Yvonne is in seventh heaven (whatever that means) Continue reading Snow in the Oaks…
That is a question that has been on my mind the last few days. I have lived for more than six decades on this earth so I have been exposed to probably millions of different situations but what is the saddest? The list initially was quite large but the more I have thought about it the more it shrinks. I think I am finally down the one thing and that is lazy minds. I know, on first thought, that seems a strange answer. After all there are things like world hunger, hatred, prejudice, homelessness, constant wars, and many other things … Continue reading What is the saddest thing in this world???
A little over a year ago the Republicans were screaming about the bailout of the auto industry. The Republicans scream about almost everything so I guess that is no biggie. But it is ironic that less then two years later they are filling their portfolios with the very stock they rallied against. Back in the days when I studied economics, which was before the MBA craze, it was commonly believed that corporations were founded on the principle of a three legged stool. When the three legs were of equal length the company was stable and worth putting in your portfolio. … Continue reading About the Bailout…..
Perhaps one of the most famous barns in America. Everything by the Shakers impresses me with its attention to detail. The inside of this barn is awesome! Hands to Work – Hearts to God. Continue reading Hancock Village Barn, NY–May 1998

Took this picture on the way to Chicago during Christmas week. The prairies of Northern Illinois and Indiana are a bleak scene in the snow months. I thought this picture was beautiful and sad at the same time. Continue reading A Bleak Winter Prairie – Dec 2010
I just got done plowing out our two hundred foot driveway for the umpteen time this winter so cabin fever is setting in. In the other seasons of the year I spend quite a bit of time traveling and taking care of the homestead. But, in the winter months most of my time seems to be spent in front of my computer monitor. I left the information technology world over ten years ago but I still can’t get this stuff out of my system. It is just too much a part of my now I guess :) So with all this extra … Continue reading Cabin Fever is setting in…..
The debate about class sizes has gone on for decades. Some say there are too many kids in one class and some say otherwise. When I was in Catholic grade school decades ago there were usually about 30 40 kids in each classroom. I think it is much lower than that today but I’m not sure. But, I do know that I believed I got more than enough of the teacher’s attention even with that class size. In those days those nuns had a tendency to wrap knuckles with a ruler if you didn’t meet up with their expectations! I got my … Continue reading Smaller Class Sizes…
As some of you may know I recently was more or less forced to leave my church home of eight years because I publicly via this blog said I believe that the earth is more than 6,000 years old. The leadership of the denomination insists that this idea is heresy. In that light it was interesting to note the article today about the Catholic church very publicly professed that they are no longer teaching creationism. Here is an excerpt from that article and the URL to the source. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110106/lf_nm_life/us_pope_bigbang;_ylt=Atn4zJuRv18tpYCeKNJVh7is0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTFpdHBkcHJoBHBvcwMzNQRzZWMDYWNjb3JkaW9uX21vc3RfcG9wdWxhcgRzbGsDZ29kd2FzYmVoaW5k Benedict and his predecessor John Paul have been trying to shed the Church’s image of being anti-science, a … Continue reading Creationism Gone in Catholic Church
http://www.usatoday.com/yourlife/health/2011-01-05-walking05_ST_N.htm The above link is an article about walking that is very interesting. Like all studies there are probably some unaccounted factors that also contribute to longevity in the study but I believe the basic premise to be true. The more we seniors push ourselves the more endurance we have so let’s challenge our current status everyday. This applies to both our physical well being as well as mental. I am a believer in the saying “if you don’t use it you lose it”. Keep challenging yourself to make that lap around the block a couple seconds faster than you … Continue reading Walking Speed and Longevity…

Recently I seem to be asking questions that I was previously very reluctant to consider. I know I am not supposed to test God but I just can’t understand why he has not shown himself more directly in more than 2,000 years? Even according to biblical standards this is probably the longest period of time without a direct and powerful intervention from God. Why are you keeping yourself hidden? Why haven’t you shown yourself in more than 30 generations? What are you waiting for? Why must I rely on ancient accounts of you that have such scant documentation? None of … Continue reading Why, God??
With this post I am starting a new category. It is called the Best of the Past. I will be pulling up some of the previous two years posts to look at them again. This one is from October 1, 2009 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Is it possible to know too much about Christian theology. I didn’t used to think so but I am tending to come to that conclusion recently. It seems that the more I study Christian theology/doctrine/dogma the more I see the disharmony in Christ’s church. Because of that I am beginning to wonder if anyone really has it right! To … Continue reading Best of the Past – Like Little Children
Happy New Year everyone. Yep, I made it into another year. I am busy finishing up my new years resolutions today. A couple of them are to travel more this year (that is if our health allows us) and another is to do more posts on this blog. I currently maintain three blogs and this one seems to often get the short end of the stick so to speak. Redletterliving.net is about God and spirituality and such; it seems to fill much of my time the last year or so. InTheSlowLane.net is mostly photos of my life both past and … Continue reading Happy New Year
Happy New Year’s everyone! God has given us another year to show the Lord’s love in our lives. Let’s not waste it! This will just be a short post from something I have been reading this afternoon. It is an article in the January 2011 issue of Friends Journal – Quaker Thoughts and Life Today. The article is entitled The Meaning of Universalism by Phil H. Gulley. I will be discussing some of the issues he brings up about Universalism in future posts but I just wanted to give you one of the short stories in that article now. I … Continue reading Why Did You Tell Us?…
For a number of weeks now I have been looking for stories about Christians doing good in the world. When I brought up the new category entitled Let’s Show the World I thought finding Christians reaching out to the world would be an easy thing. It is sad for me to say but I found the opposite to be the case. After hours of searching the internet I was only able to find one story that fit the bill for this category and it was five years old! I was able to find that most Christian denominations have some philanthropic … Continue reading It’s Sad…. But Joyful…
Sometimes a burst of questions comes into my mind. They usually come and go before I have time to even put them on a Post-It for further study. This time I was at my keyboard. Here is what I have been thinking of this afternoon. In the past I have been a member of different Christian denominations who say we must go out and save the rest of the world by telling them about Jesus. But I’m not a Jesus freak as the world has come to know many of us. At least not any longer. If you want to … Continue reading The Rambling Questions of a Past Jesus Freak
