About Those Greeks…

I see where the Greeks elected a new government this week to help them reduce austerity that was forced upon them by the European Union bailout.  This reminded me of a book I read a few years ago entitled “Boomerang” by Michael Lewis. One chapter in the book was about Greece. The book is very enlightening and well written. Here are some selected snippets about Greece. The average government job pays almost three times the average private-sector job. The national railroad has annual revenues of 100 million euros against an annual wage bill of 400 million, plus 300 million euros … Continue reading About Those Greeks…

Houses passes bill easing rules regulating Wall Street

Republican proponents insisted the new legislation would reduce the regulatory burden on small businesses and spur creation of new jobs. SOURCE:  Houses passes bill easing rules regulating Wall Street – Yahoo News. I think every one of those GOPers in this new congress need to have the words above tattooed on their foreheads. Ok more realistically written on a Post-It note and stuck on the foreheads. I’m sure that mantra is going to be their reason for every bill they pass in the coming two years as it has been for the last couple of decades. But as usual there is … Continue reading Houses passes bill easing rules regulating Wall Street

St Lawrence Seaway…

Our 2011 month-long visit to Eastern Canada was a very enjoyable one for us. We spent days traversing along the St. Lawrence Seaway. This picture was taken on our last day on the River. The next day we will start over to New Brunswick. We spent the night in a “don’t drink the water” motel on the seaway. I couldn’t sleep on the very lumpy bed so I took my camera and headed to the shoreline just as the sun was rising and managed to take the original of this picture. Earth As a Proving Ground??

Why did God go to all the trouble to create the universe? By any standards that was a massive undertaking. I am one who believes in the day age interpretation of the Bible.  In the last century or so God has given us the scientific understanding to know that the creation of the universe took millions if not billions of years to complete. Why did he go through all that trouble? But for God a billion years might only be a day. Who know? One explanation for God creating the universe including the infinitely small corner of it called the Earth … Continue reading Earth As a Proving Ground??

A Winter Wonderland…

SOURCE: Grand Canyon Looks Like a Winter Wonderland After Snowstorm | TIME. I have books and magazines of thousands of pictures that I wish I had taken. Yes I get very jealous of those who are so much better at seeing life than I am. Michael Quinn is one of them. I have taken probably hundreds of photos of the Grand Canyon and I will likely show some here, but none of them compare to this one. Continue reading A Winter Wonderland…

Please make the dumb people stop talking!!!

I mean really, tell me again how people having access to health insurance is bad. Remind me again how the earth is invincible to mankind’s abuse. Explain to me why women don’t know what’s best for their own body. Why is it we need more guns again? I’ll be better off if we lower taxes on the rich? Please make the dumb people stop talking!!! SOURCE:  Living Blue in a Red State. I usually look at Facebook each morning when I do my Web browsing and “Living Blue in a Red State” is part of that. I love this one.  It … Continue reading Please make the dumb people stop talking!!!

What Wealth Does To Your Soul – Part 2

With this post I will conclude my discussion about what might make the wealthy among us seem so callous to others needs. The source for these posts came as a surprise to me. Here is some more quotes from that article. A UCLA neuroscientist named Keely Muscatell has published an interesting paper showing that wealth quiets the nerves in the brain associated with empathy: If you show rich people and poor people pictures of kids with cancer, the poor people’s brains exhibit a great deal more activity than the rich people’s. (An inability to empathize with others has just got … Continue reading What Wealth Does To Your Soul – Part 2

What wealth does to your soul

One thing that has struck me and so many others as a very deadly thing to our country is the growing disparity between the rich and the poor. Another is how many in the rich category seem to be uncaring and even callous to those who don’t have the luxury that they have. That fact struck me at a personal level when we were recently on a visit with some relatives. I know the age old mantra to not discuss religion or politics at family get-togethers but sometimes we foolishly ignore that advice. During some discussions with a niece the … Continue reading What wealth does to your soul

Gridlock Busters…The Genesis…

Gridlock seems to be endemic within our political system here in the U.S. for decades now but never so much as it is today. Those guys in Washington just can’t get along no matter what the circumstances are.  The solution to this problem seems insurmountable using any conventional wisdom of the day. So it is time to attack the problem with some “off-the-wall” thinking. If RJsCorner is anything it is about off-the-wall thinking, it is about viewing things for a different angle. So why not tackle this issue head-on. Why not be a “Fixer” at least in a metaphorical sense? Someone … Continue reading Gridlock Busters…The Genesis…
