The Closed Door….

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.  — Helen Keller

Helen Keller has always been someone who has inspired me in my life. I would dreadfully fear but can’t imagine being both deaf and blind. If anyone knows about closed doors I’m sure it is her.  Yeah, I must admit that I probably spend more time looking at closed doors than I do finding new open ones. That is just my, and probably most everyone else’s, way of looking at life.

It seems hard to be optimistic now days. There just seems to be so much darkness around us especially during this mud-slinging election year. I will try starting now to concentrate on the opportunities in life instead of the closed doors. As we grow older health issues seem to constantly shadow us. We all realize that one event at our age can be a life changer. Let’s all take Helen’s advice and always look for that open door instead wasting our time mourning the one that just closed…..

  1. A very wise idea, RJ. The political negativity is just going to get worse but we don’t have to internalize it. I just finished the book you recommended, Falling Upward. Focusing on the positives seems to fit the author’s description of the second half of life where we are not building our container, but deciding what to put into our lives. We are better off filling our “container” with good thoughts.

  2. Hi Bob, you are ahead of me with that book as I haven’t finished it yet. I typically read four to five books at the same time. I know that sounds crazy but when I feel like reading I ask myself which book appeals to me right now and read that one :)

Falling upward is an interesting book especially since it is written by a Franciscan friar who is not afraid to say that even the Catholic church has it warts.

As challenging at it is I also try to fill my container with good things not bad.

  3. Welcome Denise. Yeah it scares me too; hopefully for the same reason as you. If the Republicans were to get total control of congress I can’t even imagine the trouble we would have down the road. But I really don’t think that is much of a possibility especially since Ryan is on the ticket. He will manage to drive yet another group from the party. Knowing that his intent, irregardless of the spin they put on it, is to shut down social security and Medicare I don’t know of any senior citizen who is of a sound mind would vote for him. (ha)

If the GOP keeps driving people away I’m not sure who will be left to vote for them except for the 20% of the population who are die-hard radical rights.
