Two Scenarios….

Banner -Off The Top

I want to do a followup of this morning post with a little more whimsical frame of mind.  As I see it we are looking at two different world views when it come to our energy needs.

One of our political parties theme seems to be “Drill Baby, Drill”. They want to extract absolutely every drop of oil out of our planet. They adamantly insist on building the Keystone pipeline so that we can take the dirtiest oil around and send it off to countries with little or no environmental regulations. They want to send our kids over to foreign countries that have oil so that we can “teach” them how to run their governments and in the process get more of their oil. They want to drill baby drill no matter the environmental impact. They deem all this global warming stuff as just a conspiracy to prevent them from getting their way.

The other political party sees all the damage that the “Drill Baby, Drill” philosophy is doing to  our country and the world. They see our temperatures warming and our arctic regions melting. They see catastrophes in our future if we don’t change our ways. They see how dependent we are on one year hundred old plus technologies and think it is time to move on to another way of accomplishing our energy needs. They see cleaner solar and wind technologies as at least part of that future.

Mad MaxLet me boil this down for those of you who might have drifted off.

One party, and I think you know which one I mean, is the party of Mad Max. They see our future as a battle to control a dwindling oil supply. They see us like Mad Max  with a gun on his hip fighting for every last drop. They thank heavens for our second amendment rights so they still have their weapons in this war for oil. While the world is spinning out of control around them they still cling to century old technologies instead of searching for better ways of doing it. They see it as a battle of “us” vs “them”.  They see Thunder Domes as a necessary part of our future.

JetsonsThe other party, and I think you know which one I mean, is the party of the Jetsons. They see that we can move beyond our dependence of a dirty source of energy to something much cleaner and healthier for our kids. They see that our future lies in getting our energy directly from the sun and wind which is available almost everywhere. They see a bright future for us as a country and a world. There are no Thunder Domes in their version of the future.

Ok, its your turn. Are you the party of Mad Max or the Jetsons?

  1. You hold such broad brush strokes. As if one party wins the oil game. California and much of the East have oil wells everywhere AND they have the worst traffic. They heat their houses with heating oil not natural gas. My red state has more wind power then others. Arizona (purple) has given tax breaks for sun and natural gas for 30 years.
Democrats and Rpublicans drive cars, take money from the oil industry and have wages war to keep oil flowing. This is simple history.

    1. Hello Janette, I agree with absolutely everything you said. Broad brush strokes and all. We are all in the same pot but that doesn’t explain how the U.S. House of Representative act and that is what I am usually talking about. Surely you can see how slanted that is. Yeah the American people are stuck with whatever the politicians in Washington give the biggest loop holes for. Right now one party want to give everything to the oil companies. Just look at the reply by the House GOP regarding this morning’s post about using some oil money for green development; “DEAD ON ARRIVAL”. Surely that tells you something….

And besides if I didn’t have someone to pick on life would not be nearly as interesting :)

      1. I been thinking about this some more and more popped off the top of my head. Janette you seem to think that the total dependence on oil is some sort of game. I think that is the point with all those yahoos in Washington; they think all this stuff is just a game that somehow must have winners and losers. I look to what I think is good for the country irregardless of party. We are all losers when it comes to global warming. Some of the GOP austerity makes sense; much doesn’t. Some of the Democrat spending makes sense; much doesn’t…

The final thought is that you seem to constantly say that what happens with the Republicans in Washington doesn’t have much to do with what the people in the States feel. That is to say that they don’t represent you. But the problem is they DO represent you; that is the total purpose of a representative democracy. If they don’t represent you then quit voting for them….

  2. To lighten things up a bit, Rather than Mad Max or the Jetsons, I’m going with Green Acres. The simple, rural-oriented life with the biggest concern being how Arnold the pig is feeling tops my agenda.

More seriously, the battle between the two world views are both too simplistic for our world. And, the whole concept of a democratic republic is that we compromise and work together. That is a lost art and leads to disaster for all.

    1. I thought I was being “Lite” with the post but from the reaction I guess not. Green Acres is a good alternate. As they say ignorance is bliss. But I do agree with your more serious tone in that the world is made up of many shades of grey and not just black and white. But it is pretty hard to make jest of two slightly different shades of grey. :)
