I hope that most of us have an underlying desire to be a better person than we are. I also know that is not even on the radar for some. Who are you and what do you want to be? That is the topic of this post.
We are all made up of our life experiences, but we are also made up of our dreams and desires. “Who Are You?” is a complex question that has to include what we don’t want as much as what we do. It is up to each of us to define our core values.
To that end I am putting out my list of the 10 best and worst human characteristics and yes, they are in my order of importance to me. I just can’t leave well enough alone, so I will also add some commentary about why I picked them.
The Best/Most Appealing Human Characteristics.
- Empathy (Brother’s keeper)
- Open Minded
For me Empathy tops the list. My Christian friends might recognize this as being my brother’s keeper, and my brother is everyone else on this earth. When Jesus was asked what is the most important law he said “Love God, and Love your brother”. He went on to say that everyone is your brother.
Of course if you have number 1, you must also have a fair amount of the other nine. So, maybe all I needed here is one item.
Do I have all ten of these characteristics? I would like to say I do, at least some degree, but I’m sure not really enough, at least yet. But, I try to live up to these ten every day of my life.
The Worst/Most Appalling) Human Characteristics.
- Narcissist (Self-absorbed)
- Privilege (Arrogance, Smugness)
- Close Mindedness
I simply can’t stand a person who is completely self-absorbed. I have coined that characteristic as Me-itis.
They have their head stuck so far up their own rear-end that they see nothing but themselves
Every thought they have is prefaced with “How does this affect ME?” They have no empathy or even consideration for others.
Privilege is not far behind as the worst characteristic. I just don’t want to be around people who look down on almost everyone else. That is the “I deserve it but no one else does!” category. They usually think this way because of money or social status.
Are these dreadful characteristics absent from my life? Of course, the answer is NO. But at least I recognize them and try each day to drive them out of my existence.
Can you give me an example of a person who lacks most of the items on the first list and has almost all of them from the second list? For me, one person pops immediately to mind. Can you guess who I mean?
I never dreamed I would live to see the day that the person occupying the Oval Office would have most of the ten appalling characteristics and almost none of the appealing ones. Sadly, that has come to pass. But, thinking optimistically I can see that this will likely never happen again because of him. Maybe we all needed this as a lesson learned.
