There are certain people who will drag us into the 21st century whether we are ready for it or not. I liken them to the pioneers of the past. People like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and more recently, Steve Jobs. These new folks will prove to be the giants in their fields who will change everything.
This post is about them and one of our most recognized traits that causes the world to race to our doorstep. That characteristic is our entrepreneurial spirit. Let’s look at some fantastic examples of that:
Jeff Bezos had a dream twenty-some years ago to sell books on the very young Internet. But that was just the beginning of his dream. When he created Amazon he let everyone know that its stock would not be doing dividends. Instead, all the profits would be re-invested in the company. Looking to the long term is a radical thing to do in our capitalist system. Everyone around him was just focused on the next quarter’s profits as Wall Street demanded. But, Jeff had a dream that he would change the very idea of what it meant to shop and that dream is becoming a reality, especially during this pandemic.
Even after all these years, it is still amazing to me that I can order just about anything I need online and have it delivered within two days and often after only one day! Yeah, I pay eight bucks a month to make that happen but that cost is small compared to driving fifty-miles round trip to buy most everything locally. Amazon has made some bold statements about their future.
“The Climate Pledge Fund will look to invest in the visionary entrepreneurs and innovators who are building products and services to help companies reduce their carbon impact and operate more sustainably. Companies from around the world of all sizes and stages will be considered, from pre-product startups to well-established enterprises. Each prospective investment will be judged on its potential to accelerate the path to zero carbon and help protect the planet for future generations.”
— Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder and CEO
He has ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans to drastically shrink Amazon’s carbon footprint. He has put the company on a path to run 100% renewable energy by 2025! That’s only four years away! He has also committed $2 billion to protect the planet.
PayPal, SpaceX, Starlink, Tesla
All the paradigm changing companies in the title above have one thing in common and that is Elon Musk. He has proven to be the most driven and innovative person on the planet, and he is only 49 years old! When the challenge goes out of one vision he just moves on to the next. I think of him pretty much as the Thomas Edison on steroids for the 21st century.
PayPal has revolutionized how we buy things online. We no longer have to trust the small companies we buy from with our credit card information. Instead, we charge our purchase through PayPal. That alone has spurred many to finally shop in cyberspace.
SpaceX end goal is about preserving humanity from it ultimate destruction. But that path also leads to climate change and an Internet connection for everyone on this earth. Elon just doesn’t do anything half way or at half speed! I am now on my third book about Elon Musk so a few more posts about him are currently in the works.
If someone calls your ideas “crazy” that is a compliment
