I know from personal experience that the idea of giving someone something that they haven’t earned is much against what many white evangelicals believe. I can still remember all the discussions that occurred about jubilee in a weekly Bible class during my evangelical years. They just couldn’t believe that God expected them to cancel debt without payment. It was just one of many things that soured me on organized religion, particularly their version.
