When we are “pre-old” we laugh at the idea of an old person spending hours in front of a TV. I think I can shed a little light on this subject.
But, before I get on with that idea, maybe I need to tell some of my readers about me using big words. I am a wordsmith and I spend a godawful amount of time looking for just the right word. The WordPress algorithm tells me that I use more words than 98% of the authors on their system. To ameliorate that, I often put a block as shown here with the definition where the word is used. Ok, Ok, I am just playing with you in the previous sentence to see how many of these types of words I could cram into one paragraph.
Now on to the subject at hand, and that is old-people watching TV.
When we finally come to accept that we are basically unable to accomplish things that might make a difference, we look for a fallback. Some call these things hobbies, some say childhood dreams, but most probably just watch TV. We need something to pass away a day when nothing is on the agenda.
I seem to be approaching that state. But an auxiliary reason is streaming video. To me, most of the current TV shows just aren’t worth watching. They are so shallow in concept, and overabundant in violence, especially the American versions. Yet another reason for going back is my wife just didn’t like shows featuring assertive women and anything that hinted gay. Streaming allows me to search out those types of shows and finally watch them.
My streaming options now include several shows from foreign countries, including Great Britain, France, Australia, and New Zealand.
I know by your standards I probably watch too much TV. But, in my mind, I watch just the right amount to correspond to my 78 years of life.

With the availability of streaming services, watching TV has become an easy time-filler. We are free to watch what we want, when we want.
Of course, that is a two-edged sword. Instant availability might mean making the easy choice, not always the wisest one. But, as you note, at our age and station in life, isn’t it nice to sometimes just engage in a little guilty pleasure?

Oh, I don’t know if I would call it “guilty pleasure” 😎
I got a post coming out next week about this topic, that just might “knock your socks off”. It took me 25 years to learn, but I am glad I am finally there. Wait for it…
