Beulah..

5star-banner We lost our beloved Beulah about three years ago now, but I still think of her quite often. She was always entangled in my feet on the couch for the occasional afternoon naps.  Whenever I said anything that even remotely sounded like “walk” she would get excited and rush to the door.   We decided not to replace her as a new canine member of the household would likely outlive us.  I have had pets all my life and although I do love Dexter, our cat, it is just not the same.

I even got to admit that I kind of miss the snow too.  We only had a one-inch day so far and with the February days in the 60s, I don’t suspect we will get another. But global warming is just a hoax..  🙂

Pets…

One of my great pleasures in life are the pets I have had over my lifetime. So I am including a couple of pictures here in my 5Star post to celebrate them.

I have to admit that the picture of me is a little dated. It was taken in 2001 when I still had some hair on my head.

Critters…

I have always had pets in my life but I didn’t know a uber animal lover until I met my wife. Simply stated she would likely wrap her car around a tree rather than hit a chipmunk crossing the road. We have had a large variety of pets over the years, mostly indoor ones but also a myriad of outdoor critters.  I haven’t counted but I pretty sure my wife has more pictures of her pets than she does of me. 🙂

I thought it is about time to show you a small sampling of some of these “loved ones”. If it ever came down to a choice between me and her pets I’m pretty sure I would be on my way out the door. The last picture in this series is of my dearly beloved as a young girl on a Wisconsin farm.

Forgive and Forget…

EggsIt’s amazing how our pets can so easily forgive and forget.  If only we humans could learn that lesson from them.  While I was talking to my wife recently, Dexter our cat proceeded to attack my right foot. He does this on occasion but this time it was annoying and I kicked him off. He took off like a rocket then stopped to give me a glaring look before going into hiding.  An hour later while we were sitting on the deck getting our usual dose of the morning sun he came back and everything was forgiven. Our pets just don’t hold grudges.

When my wife and I get into arguments, maybe I should call them “differences of opinion”, she has the habit of bringing up things  that happened decades ago. I don’t think she has ever forgotten anything that she thinks I have done wrong and she seems to think I do almost everything wrong. 🙂

Sometimes I pull out my t-shirt that has the following saying on it just to remember that this characteristic is probably a female thing and not just my wife.

Man wrong T-Sshirt

Why do we humans hang on to so much negative thoughts? Why can’t we just forgive and then forget?

That is a question that takes a wiser guy than me to answer….

My Best Friend…

Seeing a fellow blogger talk about his new pet reminded me that I have been getting too serious on this blog lately. So I thought it was time to kick back on this post and show you one of my best friend. Best friends seem to be hard to come by in my senior years. 🙂 She has been with us for about  four years now. Although she weighs in at over sixty pounds she thinks she is a lap dog. This picture was taken a few months ago during our only snow storm that lasted more than a day on the ground. This one took four days to disappear.

My Dog Does Nothing For Political Reasons…..

I love a dog, he does nothing for political reasons. – Will Rogers  — December 3, 1933

It never ceases to amaze me just how much of a sage Will Rogers was!  I know Will was always surrounded by dogs in his life. I also know that I have been surrounded by dogs much of my life. Especially since my marriage of twenty six years ago.  I think there is a TV show entitled “Its Me or the Dog” or something like that. If my wife were to have to make that choice I think it would be the dog instead of me 🙂  But as usual I am getting off track here.

One thing that makes me a dog lover is their unconditional love of their owners.  I don’t like being the center of attention when it comes to most issues but I can’t avoid being the center of attention of my dog Beulah’s life. She is my constant companion; where I go she most often goes with me. To Beulah it doesn’t matter that I am deaf. She has ways to communicate with me that don’t depend on my hearing. The way she wags her tail, the way she uses her nose to nudge me works just fine.  It doesn’t matter them I am a shrinking senior citizen who seems to lose a little more mobility as the days go on; as long as I am able to provide her with the required one or two daily walks she is happy.

But one of the things that I appreciate most, especially in today’s world is that Beulah does nothing for political reasons. It seems like everyone has a political agenda now days. Beulah could care less about such things. Her main concerns are our daily walks to the mail box (I am getting nudged now about that so will have to end this post soon), her afternoon naps where I join her on my/her couch when I can, and of course her evening meal.  Politics are as far from her mind as the man in the moon. Thank you Beulah for taking me out of that world.  Now it is on to the mailbox with Beulah tugging me all the way.

A Life Without Pets??

I know some people go through life without any pets. We had some neighbors across the street from us once who I deemed as “neat freaks” . Their house was always so immaculate. They would never have considered pets as they were just dirty little creatures who pooped and otherwise contaminated people’s lives. I always felt sorry for their son who had to grow up without pets in his life. He is grown now and I often wonder is he is also a neat freak. Often times the children turn out to be the opposite of their parents in that regard.

I personally have always had pets around my entire life; that is except for my college years where obviously they were not allowed. When I was very young we had several boxers as pets. But we also had turtles, ducks, chickens, and probably others that I just don’t remember now. After college I specialized in dogs I guess.

My wife is much more of an animal lover than I am. I think she actually loves animals more than people (ha). Whenever we watch a movie and it looks like an animal will be hurt she either closes her eyes or worse yet turns off the TV. I can’t convince her that they do not actually hurt animals for movies. Watching people be blown away by Sylvester Stallone or Dirty Harry is not problem; just don’t hurt any animals in the same scene. So obviously after we were married there have been many animals in our home. She also introduced me to cats. Up until that point I had managed to live my life cat free. That is except for the barn cats we had that roamed around our rented farmhouse area. But they would not let anyone within twenty feet of them so it would be a stretch to call them pets.

The amazing thing about dogs is that they give their love unconditionally. It doesn’t matter what your physical condition is they love you anyway. Dogs will spend hours just concentrating on their owners and trying to please them. They say that a dog is man’s best friend and I totally agree with that, especially for a deaf man like me. I also learned that cats can be loving also but more in an standoffish way I guess. We had one cat in our family for over ten years and she was a very loving animal. As she got older she was almost totally dedicated to being on Yvonne’s lap whenever she would sit down. I can’t imagine life without pets. It would not be as full as it was with them always around.

Above are some of the pictures of pets we have had over the years. We loved each and every one of them.

And the journey goes on…

The Pets of my Life…

My wife and I have always had pets around our homes.  I can’t imagine life without them.  So, I have put together this collage of some of our furry, and not so furry, friends. No, we don’t actually have any pet cows but I think if Yvonne could have figured out how to get one in our trunk we would have! 🙂
