Sharing Our Life Stories

I have been trying to get some of the folks here in my RetCom (retirement community) to think about putting their life experiences on-line so that others might learn from them, or at least be entertained by them. Some of the stories I have heard are simply amazing.

I realize that not everyone has the talents to accomplish such a task of telling their life story, but I think most should at least try to do it. What better way do we have to spend our idle hours in a RetCom than to pen our story to at least pass down to family and possibly many more via an on-line presence.

Just from my initial study of the subject, I know that personally doing this right will take some effort. What format do I use? What do I write about? These, and other questions, need to be studied before we even put pen to paper.

Why am I trying to add yet another project to my life? Don’t I have enough already? There are a couple of reasons. First, I need to keep challenging my brain. I will admit that the last year or two, I am starting to lose some of my cognitive abilities. I know this is just a normal process as we get older. From my studies I have learned that actively using your brain delays this process, but for most of us it is inevitable that we are just not as sharp today as we have been in past years.

Getting back to life-story things, I have a head start than many around me. During my 14 years here at RJsCorner I have written over 5,000 posts, and hundreds of them are about my life. Those words alone would fill an average-sized book. I have also written a journal most of my life. The current one goes back to 1998. That is a lot of fodder for this new project.

I will be investigating this to see if maybe I can start this up for myself and possibly start up a class here in my RetCom to help others accomplish it. If you have any suggestions on how to make this happen I would love to hear from you.

  1. Helping to gather the life stories of others is a tremendously worthwhile project. Too many important memories and experiences will be lost forever without an effort to save them.

    1. Of course, that’s my thoughts too, Bob. I am thinking of bringing up a specialized blog that focuses totally on life stories, and I am hoping to get multiple authors to write their stories as well. I guess I am saying “It takes a village to have a variety of life stories”.
