I personally am getting fed up with all the current stuff that now dominates Internet traffic. In my youth TV was labeled the vast waste land. I kinda think that same name applies to so much of what lands on my desktop today. I certainly realize that the U.S. is based on commercialism, that is, always buying more and more even if you continually have less and less to buy it with.
Commercialism totally dominates the Internet now. Facebook used to be about connecting family and friends. Now it is all ad after ad. BUY ME, CLICK HERE is the mantra.
I have come to realize that much of the world is not as engrossed with this idea as Americans are. In fact that may be the primary reason so many are now leaving the U.S. for countries that have a much better work/life balance. If I were thirty years younger, I probably would be one of them.

I find your use of “lands on my desktop today” quite interesting. I don’t know whether it’s because of my location, or something I’ve done, or that I simply don’t notice, or that commercialism has decided I’m not worth the effort, but nothing lands on my desktop that I wasn’t expecting. Perhaps it’s because the nearest I come to social media is here on WordPress or that I browse the Internet anonymously, but I don’t get any more unwanted junk than I did in the late 1990s before the Internet discovered commercialism.
You have my sympathies – The US is most definitely not a place I would choose to be – ever.
