Laptops In The College Lecture Halls When I was in college in the 1960s it took me a few years to learn that taking strenuous notes during lectures was actually worse than just listening to what the professor was saying. One of the reasons behind that is that I most often couldn’t read my quickly scribbled note more than a week after the event. So, it was not a big surprise for me to learn that students who paid more attention to their laptops than what the professor was saying, actually got lower scores on their exams. But a growing … Continue reading This N’ That- Sunday Morning
This Saturday post will start a short Saturday series about electronic books, otherwise known as e-books. For this particular post, I want to give you an idea of what it was like before technology came to the library. When I … Continue reading E-Books Part 1
I know the title above is rather ambitious for a single blog post, but I do want to give you an idea of how it came about and how some of the statistics might be deceiving. I have been studying … Continue reading The History of Autism
How you describe yourself is a pretty good indication of how you see your place in the world. Most people start off with their occupation, “I am an engineer…”. Some site past achievements, others family relationships. I think a major … Continue reading How Would You Describe Yourself?
To this layman, it seems that most of the Psychology and especially Psychiatry professions today are now focused on fixing disorders in people. If you go to someone in those professions you must be broken in one way or another. … Continue reading Positive Psychology
I am not one to haphazardly join or agree with an organization without first being certain I know what they stand for. I have been stung once in that regard and I won’t let it happen again. My allegiance to … Continue reading What Does Being A Progressive Christian Mean?
CBS Sunday Morning I am a pretty regular watcher now of the Sunday Morning show on CBS surprisingly called “CBS News, Sunday Morning” :) Last week it celebrated its 40th anniversary. It was started in 1979 with Charles Kuralt and is now hosted by Jane Pauley. I can remember Kuralt traveling around the country in his RV going to out-of-the-way places to tell us stories. One thing about the show is that you can always expect it is about good news in one form or another. It celebrates the humanity side of life and leaves the dreadful stuff to the … Continue reading This N’ That- Sunday Morning…
For this Techie Saturday, I want to let you in on a secret. It is better than going to the mountaintop in search of a sage to get your answer to life’s questions. That secret is Google. Now before I … Continue reading Techie Saturday – The Secret of Google
I will say up front here that I am not an advocate for homeschooling. I think it deprives a person of some very necessary life experiences. What is the primary reason that parents give for homeschooling their children? We control … Continue reading Homeschooling
As mentioned in a recent post here at RJsCorner, we in the US have been duped into believing that stock market indexes are the only indicators we need to measure the prosperity of our country. Since the stock market in … Continue reading A Cloaked Prosperity
I am a 70+-year-old white guy who leads a joyous life of a nuanced skeptic. I am not anything like the pollsters describe me: We are supposed to be senile and therefore avid MAGA folks who are crouched in the … Continue reading I’m Not Supposed To Be Like This.

When I put my RedLetterLiving blog in hiatus five years ago there was what seemed to be just a ragtag group of theologians and clergy that thought as I did. Following the Red Letters was what Christianity was all about … Continue reading Progressive Christianity
I saw an article in the New York Times recently about how a new orthopedic clinic contacted Amazon to find out who bought knee-braces in their area. After paying a fee Amazon sent that info along with names and addresses of the customers. The new clinic then sent mail to just that select group instead of flooding the area with their advertisements. I guess some would consider that an invasion of privacy but I kind of see it as smart advertising and saving a forest of trees. What do you think? Is Amazon abusing their customers? I’m a car guy, … Continue reading This N’ That Sunday- About Amazon (and other such things)

Throughout the 20th century, it was a well-known fact that good paying low skilled jobs are in large metropolitan areas. That was where the factories were, and they hired by the thousands to keep the mind-numbing assembly lines running. Today, … Continue reading Urban vs Rural Low Skilled Jobs?
I don’t think the word “remoralization” is a real word yet but I admire David Brooks for inventing it for the purposes of his weekly article on capitalism. This post is going to be about our capitalist system and the … Continue reading Remoralization
